I laugh. “Nice saying.”

She blushes a little. “Thanks, it came from my granddad. Anyway, I just wanted to apologize I guess. And also maybe brag that I was able to detect the chaff,” she adds with a giggle.

“I’m absolutely calling Wyatt chaff from now on,” Cash says, laughing.

“Totally. Me, too. That was awesome.”

We wave goodbye to her when she spots her friend by the door.

“You okay, man? Looked like he got a few good punches in there.”

“He punches like a little bitch.”

Cash barks out a laugh. “Figures. Let’s get you home, Rocky. What a day for the Lake boys. First Cody, now you.”

We start walking out the door but not before I toss a couple hundred-dollar bills to Mikey for the drinks everyone is ordering and thank him for helping out.

“And all over girls, too,” I mutter.

Cash laughs, draping an arm over my shoulder. “Damn, you’re right. Maybe I do just wanna stay single forever.”

I laugh but don’t agree.

“What happened?” Cody asks as soon as he gets into the passenger seat of my pickup.

“What do you mean?”

“You got a black eye,” he says, pointing at my eye.

Dang. I should have worn my sunglasses even though it’s cloudy. Though, he would have seen it at breakfast. “Correct.”

“So… what happened?”

“You’re too nosy for your own good, boy.”

“And you’re not? You and Uncle Cash were all curious about my fighting story. Now tell me yours.”

I grin at his response and decide to give him the PG version. I’m definitely not telling him what some jerk said about him. “Cash and I went to The Pub after pizza last night and there was a guy there saying some not nice things about people in order to get a rise out of me. I took the bait.”

“You’re not supposed to take the bait, Uncle Brock.”

“I know.”

“You regret it?”

“Nope,” I say, smiling.

“I probably wouldn’t either. I don’t like it when people say mean things.”

“Me neither, buddy.”

“I’m going to get smothered hash browns for breakfast. And sausage. Scrambled eggs, too. With cheese on top.”

“We still going to the diner?”

He looks at me out of the corner of his eye and practically bats his eyelashes. “Unless you wanna drive us to Waffle House.”

“Not today, but we’ll do that next time, how’s that?”
