Before we say goodbye, Boone says he needs to talk to me so I tell him I’ll step out of the restaurant and call him so it’s a little quieter.

Once I’m outside, I call Boone.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t want you to hear this from someone else, and I told Brock he needed to tell you but he said he didn’t want to ruin your vacation. So I guess I’m the one ruining it. But you know how small towns are and how rumors get started so…”

“Boone, you’re scaring me.”

“Sorry, nothing to be scared about. After dinner last night, Cash and Brock went to The Pub. Wyatt was there, too, and they had words. Those words ended in a fight.”

I gasp. “Is Brock okay?”

“Of course he is. Your ex-husband is a little bitch and punches like one, too. But Wyatt was saying things that shouldn’t be said and… well, Brock. You know him. He’s not going to sit there and allow him to say things about family, you know?”

“What’d he say?” I whisper.

“I’m not going to repeat it,” he grumbles. “But I don’t want you to worry. Wyatt’s not going to do anything because everyone at the bar knows he’s the one who started it even if Brock threw the first punch. But there’s something else.”

“Oh, no.”

“I know you didn’t want him to find out from anyone else, but Cash let it slip last night that Wyatt cheated on you. He’s the worst secret keeper in the entire universe, you know. Corbin told Cash because she was angry and needed to talk to someone. I’m sorry that happened and that you didn’t think you could come to your family about it.”

“It wasn’t that I didn’t think I could go to you guys,” I defend myself by saying. “It was embarrassing, Boone.”

“I get it,” he says in a quiet voice. “Trust me, if anyone in this family understands what it’s like to have your life turned upside down because you trusted someone that you shouldn’t have, it’s me. But we’re your family, NayNay,” he adds, using the nickname only he uses for me. “We would have been there.”

“To what? Kick his ass?”

“Definitely.”

“I assume that Cash told Brock this before the conversation with Wyatt happened?”

“You’d assume right.”

“And that probably fueled it for him?”

“Another good assumption.”

I’m quiet for a moment, looking around at the darkening sky.

“Thanks for letting me know,” I mumble.

“Don’t let it ruin your night. I couldn’t let you find out from the gossip train, though.”

“I appreciate that. Who knows what this story will turn into.”

“Right. The coffee guys will have their tongues a wagging.”

“For sure.” I giggle.

“Also, maybe think about bringing Paisley to Red Oak sometime?” he says, a smile in his voice.

“You’re so predictable.”

“It’s what you love about me.”

“Who says I love you?” I tease.
