My cell sitting on my desk rings and speaking of Naomi…
“Hey, you.”
“Hey back.”
“What are you up to?”
“Just changed the sheets in the drug room for Paisley. She’s supposed to be here by ten tomorrow morning.”
I chuckle. “At some point, you’re going to have to stop referencing drugs so much.”
“What fun would that be? If I don’t make jokes about it, I’ll just be bitter and angry and that’s no fun.”
“I stand corrected.”
“I like it when I’m right.”
“Never would have guessed, sweetheart.”
“I like it when you call me sweetheart,” she tells me quietly.
“Do ya?”
“Yeah. We call that terms of endearment in my world.”
I smile and nod even though she can’t see me. “That’s what it is.”
“Is it?”
“Yeah. Why would you question that?”
I stand up and shut my office door then prompt her when she still hasn’t answered my question and sit back down behind my desk. “Naomi?”
“I don’t know. I feel like…”
“Like what?”
“We’re taking it slow, I get that and appreciate it but…”
I know exactly what she’s getting at and couldn’t agree more. At the same time, I want to hear what she’s too shy to say. “But? You can tell me anything, you know that.”
“We’re taking itreallyslowly, Brock. We’ve seen each other every day this week. When you spent the night, you slept on the couch.”
Hearing her talk like this makes my desire for her even stronger but I want her to understand my feelings for her. With everything that was going on, we really didn’t havethe talklike I wanted to. It all just kind of happened.
“I slept on the couch because I knew if I slept in your bed, I’d never want to sleep anywhere else than beside you. Wake up next to you. Fall asleep with you in my arms. Once we go there, we’re not stopping and that’s a really good thing, but I want us to take our time getting there because what we have is too important to sprint through and getting there is half the fun.”
She’s quiet for a moment before she answers breathlessly, “Good answer.”
“I want to keep moving forward with you, Naomi. Don’t ever think differently.”
“We still on for tonight?”
“Absolutely.”
“See you at six?”
“You got it.”
