“Yeah?”

“That could mean anything.” I reach into the box and pull out the envelope that I placed six cards in. I found them in an old box of Cody’s things that I had at my house, placing them upside down and mixing them up on the console. “Close your eyes.”

She immediately closes them.

“Now pick one.”

“Oh, man, the pressure,” she teases, moving her finger around in the air before stabbing it onto one of the cards.

Opening her eyes, she looks down and turns the card over.

The cards were from an old matching game of Cody’s and I picked out different ones that had things that looked like dessert on them.

“Cake!”

“Then I guess we’re going to eat some cake.”

“Where?”

“You’ll see.”

“Ugh. So many mysteries.”

I turn the ignition over and put the truck in drive. “You love it.”

She grins. “I actually do.”

“Good.”

We chat about our ax-throwing while I drive us to our next destination, which happens to be another thirty minutes away. It’s a place my mom and Stone have talked about that’s “famous” for their desserts and special hot chocolate. They serve some savory things as well, but their specialty is their filled cupcakes that are topped high with frosting and other treats.

We’re assaulted with the smell of sugar when I open the door and my mouth instantly waters.

“Welcome to That’s Sweet,” the woman who looks to be close to our age says when we walk up to the counter. “Is there something I can get for you?”

Looking through the glass, I glance over at Naomi who looks completely overwhelmed. “What do you think? Should we get a few different ones to try?”

“I don’t even know where to start.”

“If you like chocolate, I highly suggest the triple chocolate. Are either of you allergic to nuts at all?” We shake our heads and tell her we don’t have any nut allergies. “The almond one is really good, too. It’s a little simpler, but is still delicious. And the lemon has this raspberry filling inside that is to die for.”

“Sounds good. We’ll take two of each.”

“You got it. Would you like something to drink, as well?”

“Coffee?” I ask Naomi who nods.

“With room for cream for me, please. And a glass of water.”

“You got it. Are you eating here or taking this to go?”

“Eating here but we’ll take what’s left with us.”

“I’ll put it all in a box for ya and bring a couple of plates and forks. Sit anywhere you’d like.”

She hands us our coffees and glasses of water before we sit down at a corner table.

“Ax throwing and dessert before dinner. I feel so scandalous,” she jokes.
