“Here you go. I also have two extra. It’s a new recipe I’m trying out so if you’re brave enough to try it, I’d love your opinion.”

“Really? Thanks.”

She nods. “You came at the right time. I love getting customer feedback so I can know if I should put them into my rotation. The cake is orange and I have two variations. One with a chocolate filling and one with a citrus filling.”

“Sounds delicious.”

“Well, I think so, but I really just want your honest opinion. I’m Joy, by the way. I’m the owner here.”

“On it.”

She leaves us to try the different cupcakes.

“Which one should we try first?”

“I’m curious about the new ones, aren’t you?”

I nod and take the edge of my fork to slice the cupcakes in half, placing a piece on our plates.

“Chocolate first,” Naomi suggests, getting a big bite on her fork and lifting it in the air, tapping it against mine.

The flavors explode in my mouth and we moan at the same time.

“Holy crap,” she says, covering her mouth. “That’s amazing.”

My answer is demolishing the rest of my half of the cupcake.

Every cupcake is just as delicious as the previous one, making it hard to decide which one we liked the best but by the time we’re ready to leave, we can at least let the owner know that the new flavors should definitely be put into rotation.

We laugh while being gluttonous monsters, eating the cupcakes like it’s the first time we’ve ever tasted them before. Naomi somehow manages to get lemon icing on her nose and doesn’t realize it until we’re eating the triple chocolate cupcake.

“Why do I still taste and smell lemon?”

I shrug but can’t hold back my smirk.

“Maybe you need to drink some water to cleanse your palate.”

She takes a drink and notices yellow-tinted icing on the rim of her glass.

“Brock!” she scolds me for not telling her sooner, but does it laughing along with me. After wiping it off her nose, she grumbles, “Geesh. You could have helped a girl out.”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

I wonder if she noticed that I discreetly snapped a picture of her biting into the chocolate cupcake with lemon frosting on her nose.

When we’re completely stuffed, we box up our leftovers and tell Joy the new cupcake flavors are a ten out of ten. She thanks us and asks us to come again, which is an easy promise.

There’s some thunder I keep hearing in the distance and knew rain was in the forecast but I’m hoping it holds off just a little bit longer. Though, I can’t deny that something about a good rainstorm makes things feel even more cozy and romantic so maybe I’m hoping for a little rain. At least, when we get home and…

Anyway.

We quickly head to the truck, stomachs full of sugar and caffeine. I’m not sure either of us will be hungry for dinner later on but maybe the next stop will be another activity. And if not, I have some other ideas of how we can burn off the calories we just consumed.
