“I’m not wearing pink.”

“Not up here, but…” His fingers softly stroke my knee where my dress ends.

My heart lurches as my eyes bug out. “Oh, my goodness.”

Nate laughs, wrapping his arm around my waist.

“Don’t worry. I think I’m the only one who saw it,” he whispers in my ear.

“I want to die. I was so mortified when it happened and relieved none of my students said anything.”

“I’m not your student, and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from you as you played with them. It’s sexy seeing you be so kind to these kids.”

My breath falters, heat consuming me. If we weren’t at work, I’d sit back on this desk and kiss him until we were both breathless.

“Oh, sorry!” Nate and I snap out of our bubble, and I look over his shoulder to see Andrea standing inside my classroom.

Nate jumps back, hands in his pockets, and takes a deep breath.

“We were just, uh, discussing a lesson.”

“A lesson in chemistry,” Andrea says.

“Andrea,” I hiss.

“What? You two were making fire or something. Is it hot in here?” She fans herself as she laughs.

“I’m gonna go.” Nate grimaces.

I shake my head so he doesn’t worry about it.

“Goodbye, Deputy.” Andrea wiggles her fingers at him, and his cheeks turn pink. Straight out blushes. I think this is my new favorite version of him. Who knew Nate Moore, Hot, Broody, and Packing Deputy would ever blush?

Once he leaves, Andrea raises her eyebrows.

“I knew something was going on when I saw him sneak out of your classroom earlier.”

I sigh, biting my smile. “Don’t tell anyone?”

“Your secret’s safe with me, although I’d be more careful. You wouldn’t want a parent to walk in and get the wrong impression of what you do during work hours.”

“I know. He came by to say hi, and we got a little carried away.”

“I could see that.” She giggles. “You and the deputy. I must say that I saw this coming a mile away and very much approve.” She nods with a smile.

“I like him a lot,” I confess.

“What’s not to like?”

“I know. He brought me a caramel frap today just because. He’s sweet beneath that tough exterior. And man, can he kiss.”

“Tell me more!” Andrea teases.

I shove her shoulder and shift on my feet.

“What’s going on?” I switch subjects.

“Nothing. I was bored.”
