Flying on the wind. Drinking in the scents of the forests.

This was what I was meant to feel all along.

CHAPTER19

Devon

My wolf slowedas we neared the edge of the forest into the clearing that had been a point of celebration only hours ago.

I didn’t have to look back to know she was there, trotting into a mess with me. I knew my mate was beside me and my wolf was proud. She’d been a wise choice from the moon goddess and we couldn’t wait to take her back to bed. But first we had a pack to take care of. Or rather a pack to clean up.

Shadows came out of the forests. Wolves fought in the distance and on the fields. Dark shadows littered the ground.

I shifted into my human form mid step and although I knew my mate would find her way without my help I still turned back to make sure she hadn’t gotten spooked. We had to attend to the carnage, and she had just newly connected with her wolf.

“Stop.” My voice boomed across the space and everyone and everything stopped. The lesser wolves would have no choice but to obey their new alpha.

“Crystal Creek pack, you no longer exist. Should you choose to disobey the call of your new alpha you will be slaughtered.”

A shadow darted through the clearing and just as the figure lunged I reached for the wolf’s neck.

My fingers sunk into the flesh leaving only one sound to escape. a whimper. The thing stopped moving a moment later, and I dropped him to the ground.

“Who told him to attack?”

Kiara stepped over the body and glared at the ground. I watched her with interest as she circled.

I know this wolf.

I nodded at her, although she needed no permission from me, I was proud of her adaptability. She’d shifted without my help and stood here like she’d never missed a day.

“Come out, come out, and play, Nessa.”

I smirked as I watched my mate with a newfound confidence. I could feel the pulse of her energy inside me. Fuck, my body was on a high for her.

Two wolves shifted as they approached us. One was clearly the old alpha’s daughter, and the other was his old beta.

Colton came up behind me. This was even enough.

We are going to have a problem, he said through our connection.

I didn’t so much as blink.

“You aren’t the alpha yet,” screamed Nessa.

The moon was high in the sky, I could see the anger streaking her face.

Another of my wolves, strolled from the forest in human form holding a body. He tossed it down in between my side and hers.

“This body would say otherwise. I killed your father. Based on the old way, I am alpha of your pack just as I am rightfully alpha of the Black Creek Pack thanks to my father’s announcement. Do you plan to appeal to the council?”

The council would side with me. My ways were dirty, but they were never unjust. The council believed that all methods were approved when it came to taming the packs that refused to come into the current century.

She moved forward, her hand extended and to my surprise my little mate darted out in front of me.

“I wouldn’t come any closer, Miss. Nessa.”

The anger attached to the way she said Miss. Nessa told me there was a reason she’d used that term. The anger radiated off of Kiara. Years of pain filtered through our mate connection. Perhaps I step aside for a moment and watch, my wolf had agreed, and we both stood down ready to protect, but ready to see how this played out.
