She wasn’t stupid enough to not realize it was a jewelry box. If there was part of her that was hoping it was a ring, it was squashed when she saw a pair of earrings, the square inside a circle. The square had tiny diamonds around it.
“These are very pretty. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”
“Neither have I,” he said. “It made me think of us. Sometimes you can fit a square in a circle if you want it bad enough. That old saying of opposites really might work. Plus didn’t you make a comment once about being sick of being a square peg put in a round hole? They reminded me of you. Of us.”
Wow. There was just one more sensitive side of him that he was showing. He always did it when she least expected.
“That’s us,” she said. “Perfectly.”

Wanted To Brag
“Ican’t believe you managed to get me to two Fierce parties in a week,” Jonah said a week later.
“This isn’t one like that.”
“Really?” he asked. “We just pulled into your office building. What is it like then?”
She laughed. “They’ve had this party for years on New Year’s Eve. It’s awesome. This is where Cody and Raina got to know each other two years ago. You’ll know a lot of people and I get to show you off to everyone.”
“Like the guy that hit on my sister?” he asked.
“Don’t you forget anything?” she asked. “I’m not even sure who it was and I didn’t ask.”
He didn’t believe her, but since his sister was here with her husband tonight and he knew Cody had already dealt with it once, he wasn’t concerned.
Not that he’d say that to Megan because she’d probably bite his head off that she could take care of herself and so could his sister.
“If you say so,” he said and parked his truck and got out.
Unfortunately tonight he did have to dress up more but thankfully no tie. This was pretty much the same outfit he wore to the rehearsal dinner. One of his two tailored dress shirts tucked into pants. There was nothing worse than clothes that didn’t fit so he spent more money than normal for certain pieces.
Everything Megan had bought him for Christmas fit and he was thrilled with it. He had a limited wardrobe, but it was nice to have a few more pieces he could grab and not curse and swear because the sleeves weren’t long enough or the neck was tight.
“I’m going to show you my office first,” she said. “I’m on the fourth floor. The party is on the third floor where the big conference room is. There are other smaller meeting rooms and the cafeteria and HR and marketing departments. Everyone else is on the top level.”
“Do you take the elevator all the time?” he asked.
“I walk up the stairs in the morning and it depends how much of a hurry I am to leave if I take the stairs on the way down. We can take them if you want. Are you afraid of elevators?”
“Hardly,” he said. “I just don’t always fit so well in them with a lot of other people.”
He looked around at the people standing by them. “Good point. The stairs it is.”
They moved to the side and she opened a door and they made the climb. The building itself was beautifully maintained, but he didn’t expect any differently.
When they got to the top floor, she led him past a big reception area and down a few halls to the back of the building. “Do they keep all you boring people locked up away from everyone?”
“Very funny, Jonah,” she said. “This is my office. It’s small, but I like it. Not everyone has their own space. I didn’t at first, but when I got promoted they gave me an office.”
“It’s nice,” he said.
“Look,” she said. “It’s a picture of you.”
“What?” he moved close and then laughed at the wedding picture of them together. “Very nice. Our first formal picture together.”
“And then there’s that one.”
