The door opened and I sucked in a breath. Mrs. Fletcher stared at me as if she recognized me and wasn’t happy I had the nerve to return. She attempted to close the door in my face when my hand shot out and I stopped it. “Please,” I pled. “I need to speak to you about Kyler.”

“Oh, hello,” Sue said as she stepped up beside her. “She’s a good girl,” she informed Mrs. Fletcher. “She’s visited before.”

Mrs. Fletcher glanced over her shoulder at Sue. I hoped she didn’t fire her for letting me in when she wasn’t home.

“So nice to see you again,” Sue said to me. “I’m sure Kyler would appreciate seeing you again.”

Mrs. Fletcher turned back to me. “You were in my house?”

“I promise you. I came with nothing but good intentions.”

Her indecisive eyes riveted between mine.

“She’s gonna let you in,” Kyler whispered beside me.

Mrs. Fletcher stepped back and held the door open for me as Sue disappeared down the hall. Kyler followed me inside. Mrs. Fletcher closed the door and stared at me, her eyes drifting over my jeans and lavender hoodie. “What do you need to tell me about my son?”

“Can we maybe sit down?” I asked.

“Ask if my dad’s here,” Kyler said.

“Is your husband here? This concerns him too,” I explained.

“Brad,” she called as she walked me to the sitting room. “We have a visitor.”

His footsteps creaked on the stairs as he descended from upstairs. He stepped into the room looking much like Kyler, only older with a light dusting of grey hair. “Hello,” he said.

“Dad,” Kyler whispered beside me.

I moved to the overstuffed gray loveseat and sat. Kyler sat beside me.

“This girl said she needs to speak with us,” Mrs. Fletcher explained as they sat down opposite me on the matching sofa.

“Nora. My name’s Nora,” I said, my hands wringing together nervously in front of me.

“You got this,” Kyler assured me.

“What can we do for you?” Mr. Fletcher asked.

“There’s no real easy way to say this, so I’m just gonna say it and hope you don’t kick me out,” I said in one breath.

They both stared at me with narrowed eyes.

“Keep going,” Kyler urged.

“I’m a medium,” I said.

Mrs. Fletcher rolled her eyes as Mr. Fletcher crossed his arms.

“I speak to people’s loved ones on the other side.”

Mrs. Fletcher scoffed.

“I only ever see spirits who have passed, so you can understand my shock when your son came to me.”

Mrs. Fletcher jumped to her feet. “That’s enough! Get out!”

My stomach dropped. I’d already blown it.
