Well, fuck again.

She must have assumed my fangs lengthening happened because I wanted to feed. Idid, but not from that chick. Did she honestly think I craved those random women I drank from every night? Did I see jealousy in those honey-brown eyes?

Maybe it was all the same for Jayne. There was something she didn’t like. The woman moaning and writhing in Pete’s lap didn’t help. Her arousal fogged the room. But Jayne held my attention. No one consumed me like her. No one erased everything else around me or smelled like her.

“It’s not like that,” I murmured. “I don’t—"

“So, you’ll feed when I’m not here?”

Her words froze my thoughts. She cared, but wanted to remain indifferent?

“Why?” she asked.

“Please, fuck me,” the woman whined.

Jayne's face turned candy-apple red. “That’s—”

“It’s the bite.” Steve withdrew his fangs and said, “Come on. Let’s show Jayne what we do every night.”

I looked at Jayne, then the others. Should I show her? How easily it was for a human to embrace a vampire’s bite? How easily she’d accept mine? It didn’t hurt. Our saliva numbed the puncture wounds by turning the pain into lust. It could quickly consume a vampire and human if they let it. I didn’t want to feed in front of her… But I would if it would drive her into my arms. Besides, if she wanted to give herself to me completely, I’d lessen my feeding and only drink from Jayne.

Heat engulfed my stomach. My mind was already ten steps ahead.I need that future.Even if I tested our safety. It was time to give Jayne a push in that direction.

I stood suddenly. “I’ll drink.”

Steve smiled and thrust the blonde’s arm out for me as I strode over. I got on one knee and took what she offered. If Jayne never let me feed from her, this might become the new normal if I wanted a relationship with her. The thought made me turn my nose up as I sank my fangs into her wrist. The taste was as foul as her scent—a rotten apple. Everything, even my feedings, changed the more I wanted to be to Jayne. I withdrew my fangs immediately.

Something was dangerously different. I wiped my mouth, rose, and fought the urge to spit. We were creatures without hearts or souls. We were monsters controlled by our emotions, our needs, and desires. If my feelings and thoughts for Jayne made me reject blood, what else could it do?

The question was sobering.

“You okay?” Steve frowned.

“I’m fine,” I muttered and glanced at Jayne, who averted her eyes. I disliked that. Wiggling my finger at her, I said, “Come here.”

She hunched her shoulders as she wrung her hands. “Why?”

“Look at her.” I pointed to the blonde nibbling on Pete’s ear. He moved out of his seat and held her upright so she would stop.

“Kiss me,” she said.

“Hasn’t she lost too much blood?” Jayne came up behind me. “Will she become a vampire?”

Pete snorted.

“We keep vitamin and iron shots,” I admitted. “It helps. No. She would need to consume our blood, and then die for that to happen.”

“Why not feed from three different women?”

Question after question. I expected nothing less from Jayne.

“We do sometimes if we need more blood,” Steve said. “But you don’t realize how tedious it is. You don’t have to carry on conversations with your food, Jayne.”

“This is what they’re all like.” Pete sighed as he pulled the blonde from his ear again. “It’s just easier to do it this way.”

“But, you have that weird mind thing.” Jayne’s nose wrinkled cutely. “Why don’t you do that for everything?”

Pete patted the woman’s head. “It’s enough that we make them forget. They’ll never know what we took from them. They’ll only remember what we tell them to. We try to let them keepsomeof the reality. What they want to happen is usually what we give them.”
