She laughed. She had missed this kind of bantering growing up. Having a brother had always been her dream and being able to talk with him like this, was incredible,“Thank you Marshall. I really can’t tell you how much it means to have you in my life.”

“Ah Kenzie, I feel the same way. I hated not having you here. But you’re here now, and even with everything else, I am so glad you are. I haven’t been this happy in a very long time. So, thank you.”He sounded so sincere it tugged at her heart.

“By the way, do you have any objections to me possibly living here full time?”

“Of course not! I was already plotting how I could convince you to stay.”

She smiled as she laid down in bed with Fiona cuddling her side. She was getting tired again, the events of the day were catching up with her and the nap at Doc’s hadn’t done much,“Good.”

Marshall apparently sensed her exhaustion,“Get some sleep Kenzie.”

“Okay, goodnight, Marshall.”

As she drifted off to sleep, the last thing she heard was a whispered, “Goodnight little sister.”

Chapter 25.

Aiden

Aiden walked into Kenzie’s dark bedroom. He stood in the doorway for a moment, just watching her sleep.

She was so beautiful laying there with her curly black hair fanned across the pillow. There was a red mark on her cheek, probably from the pillow, and the sheets were tangled around her waist. She had one arm flung out to the side like she was reaching for something and a small part of him hoped she was looking for him.

She looked completely relaxed and carefree, unlike when she was awake. He hadn’t seen much of her carefree side since that first day she’d arrived, and he missed it. He wished she could have enjoyed getting to know her family and him, without all the other stuff pushing in. He wished she could just be happy.

She started to toss her head back and forth, and he saw tears glimmering on her cheeks.

His breath caught as he realized she was crying in her sleep. He hurried over to the bed and pulled the covers back so he could slide in next to her.

This is why he’d come in here tonight. He’d been worried she would have nightmares like last night and didn’t want her to be alone.

He pulled her against his bare chest to keep her from thrashing around. Her movements stopped immediately as she settled against him with a deep sigh.

It was a long time before he felt tired enough to sleep. It had been a long and frustrating day. For a moment there, he was terrified he was going to lose her before he even really had her. And his best friend, his brother in all but name, had almost died as well. And Chris, who had been a second father to him.

When Chris had mind linked him to tell him they needed help, he barely remembered to yell for Gabriel and Gage before jumping into his truck.

The whole drive had been a blur.

He was getting really tired of taking hit after hit. Andre avoided prosecution twenty-eight years ago and Aiden refused to allow that to happen again. He did not intend to allow Andre to walk away at all. There was too much of a risk that he would be helped or rescued, even if they locked him up.

Thankfully, Marshall and Chris seemed to be of the same opinion. And if Corine was as involved as it seemed, she would be joining him.

They were also waiting to hear from Andre. They figured he would be calling with a request to meet due to the four wolves they had killed. Even though they were attacked, they would still need to deal with the council. Four dead wolves was a big deal.

Aiden had a feeling that Andre would try to use this as a way to get into Silver Lake. If he called for a meeting, they would need to negotiate a meeting place on their terms without compromising the protection of the pack. It would be the only way to keep the upper hand.

He was also going to speak with Raven about some kind of protection against dark magic for Marshall and Kenzie. Even the small amount that coated the tranquilizer that Marshall was shot with, could have become deadly if it wasn’t caught in time. They needed something that could block that sort of attack.

Kenzie shifted. She curled up closer to him with her hand resting on his chest and threw her leg over his waist.

He held in a groan as her thigh skimmed across his already hard length. He couldn’t help it with her body pressed against his. If it had been a better day and she hadn’t been injured, if she didn’t need her sleep, he would have already woken her up.

With her draped over him like a blanket, all he could think about was sliding into her. The feeling of her wrapped tightly around him, and her silky skin rubbing against his body.

He adjusted himself under the covers as he grew even harder just thinking about it.

Kenzie’s hand started to slide down his chest, lightly, just barely skimming. His skin heated with every brush of her fingers as they got lower and lower.
