“I didn’t think you’d want to hear from me.”
“I asked you to take more time to think about it, Bex.”
“Holly, I told you I already had. I know things ended weirdly between us, but theydidend, and I’m only back for the weekend. It wasn’t about telling you or not telling you. I moved my grandma into assisted living today, and I’m only here to spend time with Stan before I leave.”
“Is she okay?” Holly asked.
“She’s fine. She just forgets things, and it’s getting dangerous.”
“I didn’t know,” Holly said, leaning over the table.
“Look, I’m sorry, but Ihavethought about it, Holly.”
“And you’re over me. I get it. I’m only prolonging the inevitable here,” she said, taking a drink.
“Hey,” Alex spoke, sitting down next to Bexley again and placing her arm over the back of the booth. “What did I miss?” Her arm moved on to Bexley’s shoulders.
“I know you,” Holly stated.
“You do?”
“You’re… No…” Holly looked at Bexley. “You’re Princess Alexandria.”
“I get that a lot,” Alex said. “It’s the accent.”
“She knows I know you, Alex,” Bexley spoke, hanging her head for a minute. “This is Holly, my ex-girlfriend.”
“Oh,” Alex uttered, removing her arm immediately. “Hi.”
“So, you’re notjusthere to visit your grandma. You’re showing off your new girlfriend.”
“What? No,” Bexley argued. “Alex just came with me to–”
“Hi. My friend said she talked to you,” a woman said as she approached the booth. “I told her I’m totally sure you’re Princess Alexandria, but she said she didn’t think you were. Can you settle a bet for me?”
“I’m not her,” Alex said. “I get it a lot.” Alex nodded toward someone.
Bexley followed her line of sight and saw security guards who were standing a little too far away, in Bexley’s opinion. One approached and promptly spilled their drink on the woman.
“I am so sorry,” the guard said. “Let me take care of that for you.”
“I’ve got to go, Bex,” Alex stated. “You can stay if you want, but I’m sorry, I have to go. I’ll have them take me to the hotel.”
“What? Why?”
“Bex, I don’t have a key to your house. I have to go,” Alex repeated, slipping out of the booth.
“She’s staying at your house?”
“Holly, please,” Bexley said and turned to her for a second. “Please don’t tell anyone. It’s dangerous for her.”
Holly got serious and nodded in understanding.
“Bex, I’ll call you later,” Alex said.
“No, I’m coming with you,” Bexley stated, slipping out of the booth. “Holly, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I get it,” Holly replied. “All of it.”
