“I would never make a joke about you.” He shook his head. “Well, I might, but you’d be in on it. You wouldn’t be the punch line.”

“You’re acting… weird…” I frowned. “You’re… kind of acting like those guys, the ones that have been hitting on me, then forgetting I exist.”

Mica laughed and moved closer, closing the gap between us. “You’re a clever girl. And I knew this was a bad idea, but I had to see you. I can’t get you off of my mind…”

“Stop saying shit like that!” I hissed, darting around him and running back down the hall. “Kelly? Torie?”

I got to the living room, and they both looked over at me in confusion. Kelly frowned. “What’s up, girl? You look upset.”

“I… I am upset!” I said quickly. “Mica just came into the kitchen and started saying all this… weird shit… He was touching me and said he couldn’t… I don’t know, it was weird! I’ve never heard him talk like that before!”

“What?” Torie frowned, standing up. “What did he say to you?”

I cringed and told them some of the things he said. As soon as I did, I saw Kelly’s heart sink. But something wasn’t right. Mica didn’t like me. Mica had never liked me, not like that.

“I don’t understand,” Torie muttered. “Mica doesn’t even talk like that to his girlfriends.”

“Right?!” I sighed. I heard footsteps coming down the hall, so I immediately ran around to the far side of the couch, grabbing Kelly’s hand. Mica came down the hall with a casual expression on his face.

“Hey.” He looked confused when he saw us. “What’s going on? What did I miss?”

“Mica,” Torie said slowly, “you just went into the kitchen and grabbed Mia and started telling her some strange things, like that you can’t resist her, that you want to be close to her.”

“What?” Mica suddenly looked horrified. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

I felt a lump forming in my throat and swallowed hard. “You said… you had to see me… you couldn’t get me off of your mind.”

“Are you guys fucking with me?” He frowned. “I never said that.”

Torie took a few steps closer to him and touched his arm. “What… do you remember?”

“What do you mean?” He pointed at the TV. “I was sitting in here watching Ju-On: The Grudge 2 with you guys. Then–” He froze suddenly. He turned around and looked down the hall. “Then I was in the kitchen… How did I get to the kitchen?”

“You said you were getting up to see if Mia needed any help.” Torie looked between him and me. “You said you’d be right back. Then Mia ran in here because you freaked her out.”

“I… No, I don’t remember… Torie, if this is a joke, I am so fucking–”

“No, it’s not.” She shook her head. “I’d never joke like this, Mica. You told us you were going to see if she needed any help, then she ran in here. Do you remember any of that?”

“No!” His eyes went wide, and he looked between us. “What the fuck does that mean? I did something I don’t remember? I… I didn’t hurt you, Mia? Did–”

“No! No, you didn’t,” I said quickly, trying to comfort him. “No, I was just… confused.”

I noticed that during this conversation, Kelly seemed to relax a bit. I understood why she might be relieved, but I was just getting more and more tense. None of this made any logical sense.

“Mica?” Torie said softly. “What… What their neighbor said earlier… Do you think you were possessed?”

Before he could answer, there was a sharp cracking sound. I immediately covered my head out of instinct as Kelly screamed. After a moment, I opened my eyes and turned around. The main living room window was now in a thousand pieces all across the floor.

“What… What the fuck was that?” I whispered. “My back was to it. Did you guys–”

“I saw.” Mica nodded slowly. “There was nothing there. Torie asked if I was possessed, and it just… shattered.”

“Nothing hit it?” I asked. I knew the answer, but I had to ask.

Mica shook his head.

“All right,” I said softly. “I think… Helen might have been right…”
