“I don’t think so.” He shrugged. “How are you feeling?”
“I feel fine.” I took a deep breath as I stood up. “Kelly’s at work, right?”
“No, she’s in her room,” he explained. “I think she needed the day off from work after last night.”
“Yeah… I don’t blame her,” I muttered, heading out of my room and toward hers. Soul followed me, of course. At least I was starting to get used to that.
When I got to her door, it was open, but I knocked anyway. She looked up from her phone where a video was playing and paused it. “Hey. How’d you sleep?”
“Fine.” I walked over and sat beside her while Soul waited by the door. “How are you feeling?”
“Better.” She set her phone down and ran her fingers through her hair. “I just needed a day to relax. Feel a little bit more normal. But I’ll be okay.”
“Good.” I smiled and hugged her. “Do you want to go out and do anything today? It’s Halloween.”
“Nah. Honestly, my plan is to order delivery and just watch videos all day. The less I have to do, the better.” She smiled. “I am gonna meet Molly tonight for dinner, but I don’t plan on staying long.”
“Oh, all right! Good!” I rubbed her back. Molly was one of her friends from college who’d also moved to Chicago. I had never really been friends with Molly, though, so I wasn’t surprised that she hadn’t invited me. “It’ll be nice to see her. Tell her I say hi.”
“I will.” She nodded as she picked her phone back up and resumed the video.
I got up and headed out to the living room.
Soul moved out of her doorway and followed me again. “Do you have any plans for the day?”
“Nope.” I shrugged as I took another drink of my coffee. “I’m going to email the bar from last night my resumé. Though, I mean, their bar caught on fire last night, so I doubt that anything will come of it, but you never know.”
“All right…” I noticed that he sounded a bit disappointed at that.
“Oh, right.” I frowned slightly as I sat on the couch. “I’ll come up with something for us to do today. Find a store or something where you can go and bother people.”
“Really?” He smiled as he sat beside me, putting his arm behind me again.
“Yeah.” I nodded. “It’s Halloween after all. That seems like the best day for a demon to cause trouble.”
“Thank you.” He kissed the top of my head.
“You’re welcome.” I found myself ever so slightly leaning against his arm as I flipped on the TV and looked for something to turn on in the background. I eventually found a new YouTube video from a channel I liked that was talking about current events and put that on. After that, I grabbed my laptop and the piece of paper with the manager’s email and sent off my resume.
I told myself that I wasn't even expecting a response, and on some logical level, I wasn't. Still, in the back of my mind, I was hopeful. Having something to fall back on until I could get a different job would be a relief for both Kelly and me. It might even give Soul something to look forward to, following me to work and causing mischief.
“So… Maybe we should talk about last night,” I said as I set my laptop down on the coffee table.
“Last night? The fire?” Soul asked.
“Um… The other thing,” I said sheepishly. “The kiss…”
Soul chuckled when I said that. That made me nervous. What exactly was he laughing at?
“You’re very cute,” he said. “I hope you know that.”
“I… Cute?” I frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
He smiled at me and tugged on a strand of my hair. “I enjoyed the kiss. I believe you did as well. But I also don’t think you want to do it again. Not now, anyway.”
“What?” I blinked. “Why do you think that? I mean, not that you’re wrong. But… Why?”
He shrugged. “You were clearly embarrassed by it. And you’re embarrassed now. If you wanted to do it again, I think you’d be more confident.”
