“Yeah,” he replies, placing his hand on mine.

“Pasha thought I wanted to get rid of him,” he says bitterly.

Turning my hand, I entwine our fingers, squeezing lightly.

“I need him safe. Out of all my siblings, I need him safe.” He laughs, “Don’t tell them I said that.”

He doesn’t wait for me to reply, before releasing my hand and placing both of his on the wheel. A comfortable silence descends between us as we zoom through the city.

But while the silence is comforting, it also gives me way too much time to think. Each and every possible thought I could have, I’ve had it, and then some.

Jaxon Pace was everything I thought he would be, but still he was more. From everything I’d seen online, it really hadn’t done him justice.

I can’t help but wonder how Natalie fits in so well in this new world she found herself in. In our brief conversation, while Roman tried talking Pasha out of shooting everyone, she’d mentioned how she hadn’t been a part of the mafia life, but had somehow managed to navigate it.

Everything about her was feminine, and pure grace, yet even from a distance it is clear as day she would kill for that husband of hers, as well as for their men.

And they would die for her all the same.

“So, this mafia stuff,” I say, biting my lip as I glance over at Roman. “Where do I fit in?”

“You’re mine,” Roman replies, completely dodging the question.

“And you are mine. But, Roman,” I sigh, tilting my head at him, “that doesn’t exactly answer my question.”

“It’s simple Abigail,” he revs the engine, forcing the car to accelerate suddenly, before seamlessly switching gears. “I own this city. And for years I’ve done everything that this family has needed me to do. I’ve sacrificed a lot of things, for them and their protection. But you? You are everything to me. You’re something I’m not willing to sacrifice.”

“But I killed your men,” I say curtly.

“No,” he replies, “you killed our men.”

Turning slightly in my seat, I watch as his hands tighten against the wheel, my hair whips wildly around my face as Caesar barks happily behind me.

“What about Igor?” I ask, holding my breath. “I imagine that’s going to be a problem for you? You know, to keep me after I—”

“Fuck Igor,” he growls.

“And Polina?”

“Fuck her too.”

“But she’s your sister and I killed her husband and—”

“Abigail,” he says darkly. “I’ve already told you, I’ve wanted you for years. I’ve craved you from the moment I first saw you. No one takes you from me. Not even my sister.”

I stare at him as realization slowly sinks in.

“I know what I do will have consequences, Roman,” I grab my necklace, waving it. “This is my way out.”

“What the fuck do you mean?” He growls.

“It’s got my Widowmaker inside it. I always said that if I got caught, I’d have a…way out.” I state.

It takes a second for Roman to register what I’m saying.

“Absolutely fucking not. I’ll kill whoever comes after you. Do you hear me, Abigail Wayne?”

I shake my head, my stomach twisting as the car continues increasing in speed, down a long dirt road.
