“Your Highness,” Mike’s dad, Walter, said, joining us.
Hayden tilted his head. “Uncle Wally. You know you don’t have to call me Your Highness, right? It’s still me, Hayden.”
Walter smiled. “I actually do. This is an important event. His Majesty would like to speak with you and your consort before we begin.”
I froze. Were they going to leave me? As if sensing my unease, Mike laughed and wrapped his muscular arm around my shoulders, giving me a friendly shake. “Don’t worry about the bun—” I jabbed my elbow into his stomach. He chuckled again. “I’ll watch over Brian. Go see what your dad wants.”
Owen looked at me and raised his eyebrows. I nodded. Even though he was a dick, Mike was a good guy deep down and wouldn’t let anything happen to me. “Go on, see what the grand poohbah wants. I’ll be fine.”
“Okay, we’ll be back soon.”
Hayden and Owen left with Walter, and I scanned the room. The group wasn’t all that different from my colony. They were chatting among themselves, waiting for the pride meeting to start. They were all so, so normal. Maybe predators weren’t so bad after all.
“Hey, Mike. Who’s your friend?” a young man about my age asked.
“Hey Tal, this is Brian. Brian, meet Talon,” Mike replied, introducing us.
Talon was handsome but not my type. I liked my men older. He had the college jock look down. He looked like your typical frat bro, well built, with short brown hair wearing a school hoodie and jeans. He reached out, and I met him halfway, shaking his hand.
“Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise. What—
Talon stopped talking as the crowd hushed. Everyone’s attention shifted toward the entrance. Hayden and Owen stepped out, followed by another man who looked like an older Hayden. This had to be Hayden’s father, Edward. My breath hitched, and my heart skipped a beat. He was stunningly handsome, with chiseled features, a commanding presence, and a regal aura that demanded respect. This was the first time I'd ever met the man, and it was clear that he held considerable power and influence within the pride. He was my type.
He scanned the room like he was looking for something. His eyes landed on me, and his eyes widened, and his nose flared. It was as if an electric current coursed through my veins. Fuck. This can’t be happening. I knew, without a doubt, that Edward was my fated mate. This realization sent my emotions into a whirlwind of shock, disbelief, and sheer panic.
Now I wanted to run for an entirely different reason. How could I, a mere rabbit shifter, be the fated mate of such a powerful and influential lion? What would my family think? And what about Randy? Our relationship was already on the rocks; now, this revelation threatened to shatter it entirely. What the hell was Fate thinking?
