I bit my lip. I was absolutely clueless when it came to wines; I had no idea what went with what.
“Why don’t you start off with some water while we decide on a further drink and our meal?” Edward said with a wink at me.
Silas bowed his head and hurried off.
“You looked unsure. I’ll be happy to help you choose one, but I don’t want you to think I’m overstepping.” Edward said.
“Overstep in this instance. I have no idea when it comes to wines. I just know I like it. I like the fruity ones, but I’m not sure if that’s a faux pas when drinking it with a meal,” I replied.
“If that’s the kind you like. There’s no mistake. I’ll help you out. What do you think you’re going to get?” Edward asked.
I picked up the menu and quickly scanned it. Everything sounded amazing. “They have a spinach ravioli in a white wine sauce alfredo. I think I’m getting that. What are you getting?”
Edward glanced at the menu again. "I'm thinking of getting the grilled salmon with roasted vegetables and a lemon herb sauce. Sounds delicious.
"In that case," Edward continued, "how about we get a bottle of white wine that pairs well with both dishes? A nice Sauvignon Blanc should do the trick. It's light, crisp, and fruity, so I think you'll enjoy it."
"Sounds perfect," I agreed, relieved to have his input. I truly appreciated Edward's guidance and his willingness to help without making me feel embarrassed about my lack of wine knowledge.
When Silas returned with our water, Edward ordered the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and our meals. I glanced around the restaurant once more. It truly was a beautiful place.
“How are things going at Hayden and Owen’s? Were you able to move your stuff there?” Edward asked.
I shook my head. “I’m not moving in. I’m just house-sitting. I still have my place.”
“Hayden had mentioned something about staying in Daytona. So you may be house-sitting for a long time,” Edward said slowly.
My eyes widened. “That’s the first I heard of that. Owen didn’t say anything to me. I can’t just live in their apartment as gorgeous as it is. It’s almost as big as your place,” I said with a wry smile.
Edward chuckled. “My place is quite big—too big. But it also doubles as a pride house. I have a few members living there now, so all that space isn’t going to waste.”
“Really?” I was surprised that he allowed others to live with him. It was almost what some prey shifters did.
“Really. It’s usually for those that need a place or are struggling. We support one another. Walter has moved in recently as well.”
“What about his wife? He is married, right?” I asked.
Edward sighed. “For now. They’ve separated and have decided to divorce. It’s happened very recently.”
“That’s awful. Is Mike okay? He’s a good guy, and from my talks with him he loves his parents very much,” I asked, taking a sip of my water. “Oh, and don’t you go telling that big furball that I asked about him or that I said he’s a good guy, okay? We’ve been officially labeled ‘frenemies’ by Vanessa.”
Edward laughed. “Your secret’s safe with me.” Edward paused as Silas delivered our wine and salads. He picked up his fork and stabbed a few leaves before continuing. “He’s doing alright. At least, that’s what Walter told me. It’s sad, but I understand. I didn’t, at first, and was totally surprised, but after Walter explained how he was okay with it and they’d been living like roommates, I could see it.”
I took a quick bite before answering. “Been there. Living as roommates with someone you’re supposed to be in a relationship with sucks. I don’t ever want to go through that again.”
Edward swallowed. “Is that what happened recently?”
Damn, I opened the door on that one, I said to myself before nodding. “Yes. It was deeper than that, though. I, I started to hate Randy, and I think he felt the same about me. Our relationship turned toxic.”
Edward cleared his throat and squinted. “Would it make me an ass that I’m glad you pulled apart and ended up leaving him?”
I laughed. “A little bit, but not much of one. I understand what you’re saying. You’re happy I’m not with Randy anymore but sad I went through it?” I said as a question. I hoped I really understood what he meant.
“Exactly! That’s what I meant,” Edward replied.
I smiled before taking another bite of my salad. The house vinaigrette was delicious. I lifted my gaze back to Edward. “Going back to Hayden and Owen, did Hayden say why they were planning to stay in Daytona?”
Edward pushed his empty salad plate to the side and sat back. “He said he wanted to take Owen traveling and spend time with his mate.”
