Page 192 of Merciless
Watching Alana suffer with her nightmares, her fears over the past five years has left me feeling utterly helpless.
I didn’t think it could get any worse.
But this past week… fuck. It’s been a whole new kind of hell.
I knew that wherever she was that she’d be suffering her nightmares alone. But to know that she’s been there with him.
Fuck.
It’s taken me too long to figure this out.
I’ve been running around town like a headless fucking chicken, trying to sniff out clues, and all the while she’s been up here on this hill. Right under my nose.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer…
That has never been truer.
I should have known.
I should have fucking known.
I’ve long stopped watching the clock when headlights finally illuminate the deserted track ahead.
My heart jumps into my throat as I hop up from my hiding spot in favor of another right next to the gate.
It’s not as hidden. I just need to hope that whoever this is isn’t on high alert.
My palms are sweating by the time the car pulls up to the gates.
I recognize it instantly and my concern for what’s happening inside that house only quadruples.
Kane has left, so Doc isn’t here to check on him. Which means he’s here for someone else.
And my gut tells me exactly who that is.
No sooner has he driven through the gates, do I slip in right behind, praying the darkness covers me.
With my heart racing, I lock my eyes on the dark and sinister old manor house ahead and I close in on it.
One way or another, I’m getting my wife back tonight.
I don’t care what it takes.
Reaching back, I pull my gun from my pants and undo the safety.
Tonight, I’m taking back what’s mine, and together, we’re going to vanish. I don’t care what kind of carnage I leave in our wake.
This bullshit is done.
It is over.

“Well, that went well,” I muse after Kane and Letty left.
Thankfully, she didn’t lunge for Alana the second Reid and Kane left the room.
