My gaze shot to the glasses they had in hand.
“Those aren’t martinis,” I contested. “I can see the bubbles.”
“It’s Sprite,” Brett said and received a slap to the arm. “There’s alcohol though, but it’s only accessible to the seniors club.”
“What the hell is a seniors club?” Anna asked.
“No idea,” he replied. “But so far, I’ve been able to put decent hearsay and sightings together. There seems to be ‘another’ party upstairs that’s for the cooler kids.
“And we’re not cool?” I asked.
All three gave me incredulous looks.
“Wanna swim?” I smiled at Anna.
“Are you kidding? This entire circus can be shut down in a second. I don’t need the added trouble of trying to find my clothes and a towel when I need to scram.”
There was sense in her words, but as more and more people got into the water, my discomfort remained.
” I don’t see a lifeguard anywhere.”
“There is one,” Brett said. “Why do you think we were able to get invited?” he referred to the friend sitting by his side. “I brought a guy from work. He’s a senior and swimmer at Gunn High. I had to pay part of his fee out of my own pocket though to get him to come.”
I was skeptical.
“Can he really swim and save anybody?”
“No idea but he sure looks like he can. Let's put it this way; I’d bet my money on him rather than that fake martini over here.”
The boy jabbed into his side, and it made Anna laugh.
“Let’s get a drink,” I nudged her, and she agreed.
“We’ll be back,” we announced to the boys and headed back into the house.
By this time, our nerves had dissipated some and for a moment I even caught Anna’s shoulders moving slightly to the music as we headed towards the kitchen.
“Don’t get carried away,” I told her. “We have to leave in an hour, or we’re toast.”
“Have fun,” she shimmied even harder as she grabbed my shoulders to force me to move along with her.
“In this one night of the year, can you not be so uptight?”
I rolled my eyes, but in an effort to pull my shoulders out of her grasp, I ended up staggering backwards.
Anna’s eyes went wide with shock, while my heart nearly flew out of chest at my loss of contact with balance and gravity.
My arms flailed out as I tried to grab onto any surface, but fortunately, I was shoved against a solid body.
My entire life in that moment, flashed before my eyes at how I had just been saved from probably landing on my ass and being the joke of this entire party and quite possibly the entire school.
“I’m sorry,” I started to apologize as I turned around to meet the guy I had fallen against.
He was tall with brown curly messy hair and looked just as shocked as I was.
Anna immediately apologized as well.
I moved away from him but then something in his expression changed for the worse as he shot a look at the friend that was beside him.
