And then they stood in my way.
I smiled and tried to escape but he kept coming after me. Until eventually, I frowned, stopped retreating and met his gaze head on.
“You’re in too much of a hurry,” he said. “The least you could do was say a few more words before leaving. I could have been severely hurt just now by how hard you bumped into me.”
I watched him and felt my skin begin to crawl. He was attractive I realized, with a very cute little boy face on an almost adult’s body kind of way. But there was just something so slimy about him that made me want to move even further away.
“I have access to the VIP floor,” he said. “Come with me and I’ll get you a real drink. And a private space for us to talk.”
I could barely keep my disinterest off my face.
“No,” I replied. “I’m fine right here with the fake drinks.”
“Callie,” Anna called from behind, her tone filled with disappointment. I shot her a dark look.
“Your name’s Callie?” he asked. “Isn’t that a boy’s name?”
My gaze went to his hair.
“That’s a lot of curls,” I said. “Isn’t that a girl’s style?”
The guy beside him started laughing, but at the sharp look his friend shot his way, he soon hurried away.
“Come with me,” he growled.
Anna stepped forward and latched onto my arm so that she could whisper into my ear. “Let’s go with him. How bad could it be? There are other people up there, aren’t they?”
I gave her an incredulous look and shook my head. Then I turned back to the boy, even more adamant that I didn’t intend to go anywhere with him.
“No, thank you,” I said and was about to turn away when he suddenly grabbed my wrist.
I was alarmed.
“What are you doing?” I snapped.
“You won’t regret this,” he said. “Trust me.”
And then he began to pull me along, wrenching me from Anna’s grasp. His hold on my wrist hurt and the harder it dug into my skin the more terrified I became.
“Let me go!” I said through gritted teeth, trying my best to keep my voice down so that it wouldn’t bring unnecessary attention to us. However, he didn’t listen.
Soon, we arrived at the bottom of the stairs, and he kept trying to pull me up with him.
Grabbing onto one of the banisters, I jerked my hand away with all my strength and in that moment, he suddenly let me go.
I fell hard on my ass and lost my breath. I also lost my temper and before I could stop myself, I grabbed the opened can of soda on the floor and flung it at him.
“You fucking idiot!” I cursed and the liquid splashed everywhere! On his hair and face and clothes… the wall and a few more people around. They all swore at me.
I was shocked, my mouth instantly falling open.
“I thought it was empty,” I said. “I’m sorry.”
“Callie!” I heard Anna’s alarmed call and could feel all the attention I had been trying to avoid gradually turned towards us.
“I’m sorry,” I said again but something in his eyes made a cold chill run down my spine. He marched towards me. I felt helpless. All I could do was throw my arms over my head, a scream stuck in the back of my throat and ready to break free the moment I felt pain.
The strike I was expecting never came. Instead, there was a shout over me as I crouched down in a defensive pose to hide my face. A few seconds later I looked up to see the exchange that was intervening on my behalf.
