Page 20 of Until He Confesses
The moment I got to my hotel, I crashed onto the bed immediately with my uniform still on. I didn’t open my eyes for a long time but just as I suspected I couldn’t fall asleep, so I remained a sticky, exhausted mess that was unable to move. Until my phone out of nowhere began to ring.
I was aggravated until I realized that I truly had fallen asleep.
Instantly I shot up and felt absolutely filthy. And then the ringing came again.
My gaze snapped toward the purse I had let fall on the floor at the door, and with a groan, I staggered my way toward it.
I retrieved it and responded without even bothering to check who it was.
“Hey! Are you in London yet? I didn’t get your reply. What happened with Lucas?”
My brows furrowed as Anna’s voice registered. And then I was upset.
“You woke me up,” I complained.
“Oh,” she said. “I’m sorry. Um, okay… call me back when you’re awake.”
I started to disconnect the call but then her chaotic call stopped me.
“Wait, wait, wait,” she said.
I sighed.
“Are you with um….”
“What?”
“Lucas,” she whispered. This served to exasperate me even more so before she could say another word, I disconnected the call.
Afterward, I remained seated on the floor in the dimly lit room as I tried to get my bearings. It took a few moments for me to get myself together and in the end, it occurred to me that I was slightly disappointed. Annoyed, I rose to my feet and couldn’t believe myself. Despite all my protests, I was waiting for him to contact me. Shaking my head, I threw my phone on the bed and headed straight to the bathroom.
Standing in the shower, the hot stream was so soothing that I decided to take a bath. I got out and busied myself with filling up the tub, and discovered the various bath salts and bombs that were available.
I got excited as this was a great opportunity to create my own private pamper session.
I recalled I had one of those mini wine bottles provided on the flight as well as a few snacks, so I went to retrieve them and soon enough had myself a small platter that I laid on a stool by the side of the tub. I found some candles, lit them, and dimmed the lights of the bathroom. It was heaven and a very promising start to what I truly hoped would be a suitable enough vacation despite the surprise that I had been dealt thus far.
Just as I was about to step into the bathtub, there was a sudden knock at the door.
I was surprised, confused, and alarmed all at once because it was the absolute strangest time for such a thing to be happening unless there was some kind of an emergency.
I listened and found that nothing sounded out of place so I made the decision to ignore it. Then my phone started to ring.
With a sigh, I tightened my towel across my chest and walked out to the room. I headed straight to the door but paused and glanced at my clothes wondering whether it wouldn’t be best to get dressed just in case.
Another knock sounded on the door, and it was then that my suspicion finally threw out a probability. It was difficult to believe it. But then as I watched the door, I found myself heading over to it even more quietly than before.
When I arrived, I looked through the peephole but unfortunately, the only thing I could see was his head of hair. Still, it was more than enough for me to know exactly who it was.
He was unmistakable and my shock was immense.
A message was delivered to my phone and as my gaze went to it, I realized he had given up and he was about to walk away.
I felt relieved but then as I remained by the door, still barely able to breathe, I couldn’t help but doubt my relief because the further away he went the more disappointed I began to feel. And it was a heavy horrid weight on my shoulders that I wanted absolutely nothing to deal with. Before I could come to my senses, I pulled the door open.
At first, he didn’t turn around but as his steps began to slow, I could tell he was aware that I had opened the door. Eventually, he stopped and then he turned around to meet my gaze from down the hall.
My breath caught in my throat.
