“Sure, and for all the mini vacations you’ve taken all these years you’ve always hooked up with your clients. You know what, I’m not even going to indulge you. I need to leave home soon so let me know what the dilemma is. You want to return the money?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

“Of course, but before that, I need to know what it was for.”

This I had no trouble saying.

“I was trying to kick him out. He refused and offered it as payment for the one-night stand.”

“That sounds disrespectful.”

“Um… for one million dollars?”

“Even for ten. It’s still a lot of money though to drop for a one-night stand or is this going to be a continuous arrangement?”

“Nope, only last night.”

“Hm,” she said and then she laughed.

“He still understands you so well.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“He obviously knew that you wanted to sleep with him too, but your head was in the way, so he gave the money to you in order to soothe your conscience.”

“What?”

I was struck as I tried to understand how she had put this together.

She sighed.

“This is unfortunately not as interesting a situation as I thought it would be because the money is not for your services Miss Hooker. He truly wanted to sleep with you so basically, he paid to get your conscience out of the way. So now that it’s morning, return it. If you don’t want to then keep it which is my preference by the way. He didn’t use it to pay for your body anyway.”

I listened and found that her words made sense, however, I suddenly didn’t want to discuss the matter anymore because I wanted to get it all out of my mind as soon as possible so that I could return to my own life.

“Okay,” I replied. However, just before I could disconnect the call, she asked me the question I had been turning over and over again in my head.

“Do you regret it?”

I told her the truth.

“My head and every other reasonable part of me says yes.”

“But your heart says no?”

I smiled.

“It says yes too, but I just don’t feel it. All I can recall is how amazing it was. I haven’t felt that way since, well-”

“Since the last time you were with him?” she asked, and I blushed again.

“You know I still believe you two are truly meant to be together, so why don’t you call him?”

“You’re insane,” I said, and could hear the amusement in her tone.

“Says the girl who accepted a million dollars to screw her high school ex.”
