That was a piggish thing to say. “She’s not entertainment.”

Luke inhaled. “Sorry. You’re right. I’m a bit confused by what’s happened.”

So was he. “I get it.” He called Malia and told her they’d found out a lot about the man in the grave. Could she come over? “Luke is cooking.”

“I’d love to. Where are you? It sounds like you’re in the truck.”

“We are, but we’ll be home in a few.”

“Okay. I’ll put away my books and head on over.”

“I can’t wait.” He then disconnected.

For the rest of the drive home, Luke didn’t say anything. Once Malia arrived, she’d be able to draw Luke out a bit more.

They had been home less than five minutes when Malia drove up. Despite the trying day, Ryan’s energy soared the moment he laid eyes on their delicious mate.

“Tell me what happened today.” She took off her coat and draped it over a chair.

They needed to clean out the coat closet. Malia deserved her space too.

“I need to kiss you first. It’s hard to think when you’re near me.”

She laughed. “You are so adorable.”

“Oh, yeah. Why not show me?”

Malia wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him like there was no tomorrow. He’d just slipped his hands under her sweater when Luke stepped into the living room.

“We have work to do,” he said.

Ryan broke the kiss. “It’s true. Have a seat. Can I get you something?”

“Wine?”

“I’ll get her a glass,” Luke said.

He and Malia sat next to each other on the sofa. Luke returned with two beers and a glass of wine. He handed her a glass, and then gave Ryan his bottle.

“I’m waiting,” she said.

Luke did most of the talking, starting with the phone call and the subsequent reveal by Pete.

“Your father is alive? For real?”

“So Pete says,” Luke said.

“Why do I get the sense you don’t believe him?”

Luke shrugged. “Admittedly, nothing he said was a red flag, but maybe I don’t want it to be true.”

She nodded. “You said that the money given to Pete could probably be traced, right?”

“Yes, but it will only say which bank it came from. Most likely, our father changed his name.”

Luke shook his head. “I’m not so sure. You have to have connections to get a new identity.”

“If that’s the case, we should be able to find him.”
