Since they planned to return to the complex after running a few errands, Jeff’s car was parked back where they had been working. No use both of them driving to town and back.

“Not directly, but Blair asked why I didn’t come in last night!”

Zane laughed. “That’s fantastic.”

“Is it?” Jeff asked.

“What’s your problem? You want her, don’t you?”

“Fuck yes, I want her. I want her so bad, I’m not sure I can restrain myself around her.”

“Believe me, it’s hard,” Zane said. Images of their amazing time in bed surfaced, and his inner wolf made his libido shoot sky-high.

“Did she question you about any of your wolf changes?” Jeff asked.

“No. I think she was so turned on that she wasn’t studying me very carefully. And I’m not saying that to brag. She’s a werewolf. I think she might have been experiencing the same out-of-control behavior that we were, only she probably had no idea what was happening to her.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Jeff said.

When they approached the guardhouse to exit the Development, Zane slowed. “What the fuck?”

CHAPTERNINETEEN

“Shit!”Jeff yelled as he and Zane leaped out of the car.

Carl, the werewolf guard assigned to the 1 PM - 9 PM shift lay slumped on the ground, his shirt soaked in blood. Shards of glass were scattered around him. When Jeff glanced up at the guardhouse, he spotted the broken security cameras.Fuck.

Zane dropped to his knees beside the guard whose color had drained from his face. “Carl?”

Jeff did a quick scan of his body. “Looks like he was shot two times, but where the bullets entered, it shouldn’t have knocked him out. I'm calling for help,” Jeff said as he pulled out his phone. Carl was a werewolf. Unless the bullets hit his heart, he’d survive.

"Who are you calling?" Zane asked.

Werewolves didn't use the normal human hospital. Their quick healing would signal something was off. “Malia. She works with Dr. David Weston. Hopefully, he can meet us at his father’s house.”

His dad, Augustus Weston, ran the Midvale Hospital and was married to Jeff’s aunt’s sister. David’s dad had converted part of his house into a small operating room where he treated werewolves.

“Jeff? Is Blair okay?” Malia sounded slightly out of breath as if she was in the middle of something important.

The last time he’d called, it had been about Blair. “She’s fine, but one of the guards at Woodland Estates was attacked. He was shot twice. Can David’s father help him?” She was aware that Dad only hired werewolves.

“Let me ask David. I’ll call you right back.” She disconnected.

He turned to Jeff. “Malia is checking with David.”

“Good.”

Carl groaned in pain, struggling to speak through clenched teeth. “Ow. Damn, that hurts.”

“Take it easy,” Jeff said. “Can you tell me what happened?”

“Ah…The last thing I remember was a blue truck approaching. I stepped out of the guardhouse to get their names and license plate number when it was like I was struck by lightning.”

“You were shot, Carl. Twice. Do you know if they were werewolves?” Jeff asked.

“At least one of them was…Sorry. I don't even remember getting shot, just vibrating and then falling to the ground.” He winced, struggling to even talk.

“That’s okay. We’ll get you fixed up in no time,” Jeff said.
