“What?” I replied defensively. “School is ending soon, and I think it’s a good idea to bury past feuds.”

“Sure, but do you really think she wants that, too?” he asked pointedly.

“Yeah, I mean, why else would she reach out?”

“I think you’re being a little naïve here.”

I shot him an annoyed look. “Maybe you’re just being too cynical.”

“I’m just telling you to be wary,” he advised. “People don’t change like that in such a short time. It’s possible that she has some ulterior motives.”

“Bryan, I know Kathy made mistakes, but she wants to make things right between us again.”

“God, Romai,” Bryan shook his head. “You’re way too forgiving.”

“And why is that a bad thing?”

“It’s not,” he replied sincerely. “But you should be forgiving towards the right people. Has Kathy proven that she’s worth that to you?”

I sucked on my lower lip, lost in thought. I hadn’t expected Bryan to be so cynical, and he was making me second-guess things with Kathy as well.

“I don’t want to be so harsh,” I replied finally, sighing.

“Up to you. I’m not going to tell you what to do, but my advice will still be to be careful around her.”

“You’re worrying too much. Nothing’s going to happen. You’ll see.”

“Well, I guess you’ll find out soon enough…”

Chapter 24

Bryan

Prom day was finally there. I was parked outside Romai’s house, waiting to pick her up. When she finally came outside, I was taken aback by how gorgeous she looked.

“Holy shit,” I muttered under my breath. “Romai…”

“Do you like my dress?” she said, giving me a shy twirl. “It’s the same dress my mom wore to prom.”

“You look gorgeous,” I replied earnestly. “Everyone is going to die of jealousy when they see you by my side.”

“Do you really mean that?” she said, “I’ve been so nervous all evening.”

“What’s there to be nervous about?” I asked, “You have me by your side, and you look stunning. It’s going to be a night to remember.”

We began driving over to the prom venue, and I couldn’t help but steal glances at her every now and then. The more time we spent together, the more I was growing used to having her around.

“Hey Romai, you know I was wondering something…”

“What?” she asked, looking into her little compact mirror to fix her makeup.

“What happens when school ends?” I asked, a trace of vulnerability in my voice.

“We graduate?” she laughed.

“No,” I shook my head. “I meant between us. What’s going to happen to our fake relationship?”

I had been thinking about it for a while now. Even though we were not officially dating, I had grown to like Romai. A lot more than I ever thought I would.
