Romai seemed surprised by the question. She raised her eyebrow at me.
“Well, I guess time will tell.”
I knew this was the moment that I should say something. The feelings brewing up inside me for Romai were real, and she deserved to know them.
But I braced myself. If I was going to admit my feelings for Romai, then it would have to be a special occasion.
“Why did you ask, though?” she turned to look at me with curiosity shining in her eyes. “Did you have other plans?”
“No,” I smiled. “As you said, only time will tell.”
“Wow, Mr. mysterious,” she chuckled. “Are you really going to keep me hanging like that?”
“Patience, babe,” I winked at her. “I can’t reveal all my secrets to you right now.”
I had decided that after prom, I was going to take Romai out and confess my feelings.
Things with her felt natural and right. I didn’t want to lose her just because our ‘fake relationship’ came to an end.
When we walked into the prom venue, we were holding hands. That was typical for us whenever we made an appearance in public, but this time, it felt different.
I wasn’t pretending anymore.
“Hey there, handsome boy,” Jake intercepted me, and Elizabeth was right beside him. “You ready for tonight?”
“Like I’ll ever be.”
Romai and Elizabeth were busy talking to each other now, and I took this moment to take Jake to the side in private.
“I need your help with something,” I said to him in a hushed tone.
“What is it?”
“I’m finally going to confess my feelings to Romai.”
The widest grin came on Jake's face, and he patted me on the back. “I knew it. It was obvious to me that you were going to fall for her.”
“Do you think she’s going to return my feelings?”
“Dude,” Jake narrowed his eyes at me. “Have you seen the way she looks at you? It’s obvious that both of you really like each other. Everyone can tell.”
“I hope so,” I grinned, holding him onto his word.
Romai had been the first girl who actually made me want to ask her to be my girlfriend. Maybe it was because our story was so unique, or perhaps the fact that she always kept me on my toes.
But whatever it was, I had finally decided to get over my commitment issues once and for all.
The thought both excited me and made my stomach turn with nervousness at the same time.
“Shall we dance?” I asked Romai, sneaking up behind her as she talked to Elizabeth.
“Oh, of course,” she blushed. “I thought that you’d never ask.”
“Hey, girl,” Kathy intercepted us before we could make our way over to the dance floor. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”
My gaze darted between Kathy and Romai. I knew that the two had rekindled their friendship, but I was still highly suspicious of her.
“She’s busy,” I chimed in.
