As time passes fewer shots are fired, meaning whoever is here is doing a stellar job.
I’m about to reach out and shoot the moving person when I’m suddenly pulled back from my position.
“Tony, you’re shot.We need to get you out of here.”Their familiar voice starts the adrenaline crash I was hoping to avoid a little longer.
“Knox, how the hell did you find me?”I ask disbelievingly.
“We have no time.We need to get out of here now! There are more important things we need to discuss.”Knox manifests fear.
“You need to listen to your team.Get the fuck out of here while you can.I’ll sort out this mess and make sure Reginald is alive when you’re ready.”
For the first time in my life, I trust Darius.I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive him, but this is a good place to start.
“Go, you idiot.”Darius shoves me toward Knox at the same time handing me back the rest of my weapons.I take a deep breath and follow his lead through a side door close to where we are hidden.
Knox expertly shoots two men who are on the outside perimeter.I take down another as we round the corner then one of Xander’s cars comes into view with Vince behind the wheel.Like any good getaway driver, he screeches to a halt beside us only long enough for us to jump in, our doors slamming as he takes off again.
Fatigue is taking its hold on me, but I refuse to go out before finding out why they’re here.
“One of you better tell me what the fuck just happened because there’s no way you found your way here without following someone. And that someone could only have come from the meeting point at the port.”
The air is silent.
“What are you not telling me?”
“Jordannah double crossed Darius. She has Lacey.”Vince is the one to speak.
After years in the military, he’s used to informing people of bad situations. But this isn’t bad, this is a fucking catastrophe of epic proportions.
“Where?”I ask panicked.
“We thought she was in the car that led us to you.Aside from the driver we shot, it was empty,” Knox fills in the blanks.
“Where. The fuck.Is Lacey?”I reiterate with a shit ton of malice lacing my anger.
“We don’t know.”
A call connects through the Bluetooth speaker while I’m busy ignoring my own injury and seething hell on that bitch Jordannah.
“Darius, do you know where Jordannah was taking Lacey?”Vince asks.
Meanwhile, I don’t give a fuck how they exchanged numbers so suddenly.
“What do you mean? She was never supposed to be near her.Hold on.”Muffled growls and noise fill the SUV we’re in.“Reginald swears he didn’t order Jordannah to get Lacey. She was supposed to be at the warehouse with us, but she never showed up.Can someone please shed some light on this situation.”Darius is now seething.
My world flashes before my eyes. The one thing I told Lacey not to do, she did.She took matters into her own hands.
“Darius, I need your help to find Jordannah. When you do, keep her alive until we know of Lacey’s whereabouts. After that, she’s all yours to deal with.It looks like we’ll be working together a little longer,” I proclaim.
“We’ll find her.I owe you that much.”Darius disconnects the line.
I don’t need sentimental bullshit getting in the way of finding my warrior pixie.I need action.
“Boss, you need to read this.”Knox passes his phone over.
“What now?”I snatch it from him and read it aloud.
Unknown: “Isn’t it interesting how quickly the tables have turned.Thank you for making the exchange effortless.”
