I chance a glance around the dully lit room as far as my sight will allow and stop when I find Darius. His subtle head shakenokeeps my eyes moving so I don’t give Reginald the satisfaction of thinking he’s getting to me.

“This really is bittersweet.I thought you’d put up more of a fight for her. It’s a shame, really, but never mind, I’ll have her soon enough,” he taunts.

That gets my hair up.“You touch her and I’ll skin you alive. You’re a desperate man if you think she’ll want any part in this sick and twisted fantasy of yours.Do your fucking worst and see who comes out on top.I guarantee it won’t be you!”I spit on his shiny leather shoes.

Reginald turns lobster red.If he went any shade darker, he’d be boiled.

“I’ll end you myself.”His gun is pressed hard against my forehead, the barrel making an indentation.

“Reginald,” Darius warns.

Adrenaline sets me on high alert, but my exterior stays unaffected.

Reginald looks between me and Darius, calculating his next move, then lowers the gun and turns away.

That was his second mistake.

With lightning-fast speed, Reginald turns back around with that devious smirk in place.

A gunshot echoes throughout the building at the same time pain sears through my chest, winding me in the process. My head jolts forward after the impact.A raging fire burns beneath my lips, wanting to tell this asshole he’s made his final mistake.

“Reginald,” Darius yells, again.“This wasn’t part of our deal. You said you’d let me handle him.”His harsh words weave through my eardrums, but I can also hear the panic in them. The same panic I heard the day I ran and never returned home.

I’m too busy channeling the pain to listen to them fight about their deal or the repercussions for Darius if he stands in Reginald’s way.Quite frankly, the longer they bicker, the better chance I have of surviving.Or so I hope.So long as Darius can act as well as he can throw a punch, it’ll buy me some time.

“Someone’s coming,” someone yells from behind me.

It gets both Reginald’s and Darius’ attention. From the corner of my eye, I see reflections as gun barrels are being raised and men are running for cover.

Within seconds, there’s nothing but silence until the crunching of tires roll to a stop, then heavy footfall comes to a sudden stop at the outside of the building.

“It’s one of your cars,” someone sings through the building.

“Lower your weapons,” Reginald orders.

What the fuck is happening?I look at Darius and he’s as apprehensive as I am.

The chattering of chains as a roller door opens welcomes whoever the newcomer is.I just hope it’s not Lacey. But I’ll never know as I’m facing away from the door.

There’s eerie silence as time passes in slow motion.

“Take cover,” someone yells as gunfire bursts my eardrums.

The only thing I can do to save myself is try to knock the chair I’m in over and lie on the floor, but the fucker is bolted down.

I watch as Reginald’s men fall one by one in front of me.Whoever has come isn’t an enemy.

“We need to get you out of here.”Darius is behind me, undoing my restraints in between taking clean shots of the men who want me dead.As it turns out, I underestimated the number of people Reginald has under his command.

“What the fuck happened?”I snap as I’m released, then take the gun that’s handed to me.

“I don’t fucking know, but somehow your security guys found you and we need them to stop shooting at my men.”The moment I stand a man rushes toward us, blocking our path.We rush to take cover behind a stack of wooden crates when a bullet hits my leg.

“Argh, fuck!”

I’m stopped from falling by Darius wrapping his arm around my waist and dragging me the rest of the way until we’re finally behind our cover.I rip my shirt off to wrap it around the graze on my leg, then I assess the bullet that hit my chest, thankful I’m wearing a bulletproof vest.

It’s like we’re in a fucking western standoff.Bullets are flying from one side of the building to the other.Windows braking, pieces of debris falling.
