Page 90 of A Little Luck
Beside him, my son is in a little-boy version of the mens’ suits and vest, just like Owen. Pinky is in a sage green dress similar to ours, and all of them are watching, waiting for the bride.
Only Adam has his eyes on me, and I feel distinctly, all the way to my bones, that he’s been waiting to see me.
When I reach his side, his hand moves to my waist, and the warmth of his face hovers close to my neck. “You are so beautiful.”
Tingles like warm liquid flow down my skin, and the music changes. The Bridal March begins, and everyone stands as Cass emerges from the small dressing room.
She steps out, looking like the supermodel she is, tall, willowy, with long dark hair and dancer poise. I sneak a glance at Alex, and his eyes are fixed on hers like he’s seeing his future and he can’t wait.
CHAPTER20
ADAM
“The wedding was as beautiful as ours,” Britt announces from where she sits with Aiden’s arm around her shoulders. “Great work, Piper!”
A live band is playing a mix of old and new favorites, and Alex and Cass are on the dance floor surrounded by several of the older guests dancing to the instrumental version of “Fly Me to the Moon.”
“Just barely,” my girl grouses at my side. “Damn ghosts.”
“What ghosts?” Ryan stands at the table beside her eating a dinner roll.
“The distillery is haunted,” Jemima tells him, sliding one of the few flowers that survived the van wreck behind her ear. “But the wedding was so magical, the ghosts realized we didn’t need them, and they all went and did shots with the angels.”
Ryan’s whole face wrinkles in disbelief, and he looks at me as if to get affirmation this Taylor Swift lookalike is crazy.
Piper puts her hand on her son’s waist. “That’s not what happened.”
“Don’t be humble,” Jemima cries. “The weddingwasmagical!”
Piper holds up her hands. “Thank you, and there are no ghosts. It was a joke.”
“Cats are good at finding ghosts.” Ryan stuffs a big piece of roll into his mouth. “I bet Fudge would’ve kept those bad ghosts away.”
“Fudge would’ve run away from this place.” Piper gives him a hug. “The waitstaff kept tripping and dropping things and making loud noises.”
Leaning closer, I whisper in his ear. “I think they were moving too fast, and ghosts were an easy excuse.”
Ryan raises his eyebrows, nodding like he knows exactly what I’m talking about. “Ghosts. Pfft.” He rolls his eyes.
“Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the reception.” A loud voice on the mic cuts through the music. “We’re getting started with the couples’ dances! Who’s ready to shake a leg and dance like a couple? A couple of what, you say? Well, let’s find out, shall we?”
Piper’s face wrinkles, and she stands to meet Alex, who’s leading Cass off the dance floor. “Who is that?”
Alex glances at the stage. “I don’t know. He doesn’t seem to be with the band.”
“Uncle Alex! Aunt Cass!” Ryan runs up to them. “I told Mom Fudge is great at chasing ghosts! I can bring him and let him chase them all away if you need me to!”
Cass scrubs her fingers in his hair. “You and Fudge are my favorite ghostbusters.”
“Might not be a bad idea to have a cat up here.” Alex holds her waist. “Better than mouse traps.”
“Fudge is great at catching mice, too!” Ryan shouts over the music, and Owen walks over to get in on the action.
“I didn’t know we had ghosts in the distillery.” Cass looks up at my brother, her voice low and soft. “Or mice.”
“Surprise.” Alex kisses the tip of her nose, and I’m pretty sure they won’t be with us for long.
The emcee comes on the mic to announce the first of the couples’ dances. “Ohhhkay, ladies and germs! Let’s get started with the daddy-daughter dance. Let’s have all the sexy daddies and their hot little daughters on the dance floor right now, and that includes our beautiful bride!”
