His eyes dance back and forth, searching mine for an answer I can’t seem to form. Is it his constant rejection when I’ve made subliminal innuendos? I know they are never straightforward and clear, but if he did have interest, he’d make it easily known like he normally does with women. His body is nearly flush with mine and I feel his gentle breath hit my lips. It’s not the first time he’s been this close, but it’s the first time my lungs forget how to expand with oxygen. I hold my eyes on his, willing them not to stare at his lips. The last thing I want to do is weird him out.

“What do you want to say, Kelsie?” His voice is low and hits me right between my legs. This is going to ruin me for the rest of my life.Freaking pathetic.

Instinct takes over as my eyes float to his lips and the crosswalk beeps, signaling the okay to cross. I jolt from the sound and turn to follow the group crossing. Max reaches for my bare arm, hitching my breath at the contact. My arm breaks out in goosebumps, which he notices. And for once, his face is unreadable.

“I want you to let me go home and fall asleep early.” He releases me, and I don’t turn back to confirm the gaze I know is searing through my back as I make my way up one of San Francisco’s steep hills.

Except I don’t fall asleep early. By midnight I give in, and for the first time, I find my release while fantasizing about my best friend.

Chapter 6

Max

I haven’t slept the past two nights. Kelsie ended up absent from her training session due to a headache, which I almost called her out on because that woman made sure to give an important presentation while in labor with Mallory. She’s a fucking giver and lets nothing stand in her way. Except whatever the hell has been shifting between us over the past few months. I head past the fitness class Adam teaches twice a week, knowing Kelsie usually joins. Adam works here because he enjoys it more than his day job. Helping others achieve their goals keeps him humble. But Kelsie is nowhere to be found.

I run my hand through my hair several times, waiting for the strands to flow through my fingers and calm me. Pulling out my phone once more, I see she still has not replied to my texts that have beenread. Did those models on the street really play on her vulnerability that much? Flirting with women never bugged her before and this time I didn’t do it at all… barely. Our eye contact has always been important to us because we can read each other so well. A lifetime of communication has been crafted into understanding each other’s expressions. I know it wasn’t fluke when her eyes paused at my lips. Her breath hitched and her eyes grew wide, which is new.

Making up my mind, I decide to go over since her avoidance is childish.

“It’s a little late for a play date.” Lauren opens Kelsie’s door. “The kids are in bed.”

“Where is Kelsie?” I like Lauren, but I have still been pretty short with her since I watched what she did to her and Adam’s relationship months ago. They are happier than ever now, and I am glad she got the help she needed. I still have to be team Adam, regardless.

“She didn’t mention you were stopping by at this hour.” Her voice is quiet, as if she doesn’t want anyone to hear. It’s barely nine.

“Hey, Ren, what about this set?” Kelsie’s voice sounds from her room before she appears at the end of the hallway. Her body is wrapped in a delicate red lace bra and matching panties. Her eyes are glued to her phone screen, and as it lights up, her cleavage is on even more display. “I might return it for a bigger size because my boobs seem too exposed in this.” She walks closer and finally Kelsie looks up, locking her eyes with mine, and I swallow.

Hard.

Like my growing dick.

No fucking way she needs more fabric to hide those beauties.

She freezes as her mouth opens and shuts. I tilt my chin up to show that I am obviously looking away. Not because I don’t like what I see. She’s a curvy goddess, and it’s taking every bit of restraint to not shove Lauren out the door, carry Kelsie straight to her bed, and ruin our entire friendship for an orgasm. I don’t need to look at Lauren to see her prideful grin.

“Kelsie, you look super hot. I wish I had hips like that for Adam to get a good grip on.” She giggles. “Or a plump ass for him to bite.”

“Again, that’s my brother, Lauren.” Kelsie huffs. “Max, you’ve seen me in a bikini before. This is practically the same.”

Her bikinis are never lacy and see-through... But I’ve seen her in a fair number of bikinis over the years. Seeing her half naked is nothing new. Am I the one being weird?I bring my head back down, but don’t overly check her out.

“You read my texts, but didn’t respond,” I state simply. “Had to make sure you were alive.”

“As you can see, Lauren’s over, and I was asking her opinion about my online orders.” She shrugs, making her breasts bounce. “It’s rude to be on my phone.”

I raise my eyebrows as her phone lights up again in her hand. “It looks like you take that etiquette very seriously.”

“Thanks for the girl talk andCharmedreruns, Kels.” Lauren steps to the side of me and opens the door, allowing more light to shine on Kelsie’s curves. “I will be next door if you need me to kick him out.”

I shut the door behind Lauren, and the hallway darkens. Blinking quickly, I try to keep my eyes on Kelsie’s to be polite. “You should go put some clothes on so we can talk.” I swallow, though my Adam’s apple feels stuck in place as I fight to restrain the response I desperately want to act on.

For a split second, her face falters, and I wonder if she wanted a different reaction. Her chest rises from a deep breath as she collects herself, and I let my eyes drop to her breasts. Her eyes don’t catch my stare as she avoids mine yet again. I need to get to the bottom of this without scaring her off.

“Fine.” She turns, walking back into her room, and I suppress a groan. It’s not just panties. It’s a lace thong. Lauren was right, Kelsie does have a biteable, plump ass.

Once Kelsie is a little less distracting for my pea-sized male brain, she sits on the couch across from me with a knitted white blanket draped over her legs. She remains silent as her innocent eyes blink around the room.

“You’re still here.” She raises her eyebrows and spews off attitude. “I’m alive, as you can see.”
