“I want to walk around. I want to see the city through new eyes. Is that lame and boring?”

“Not at all. It sounds perfect.”

I’m rewarded with a bright smile. “Where should we go first?”

I should definitely take it slower than usual. Not Lair. He’s not ready for that.“Why don’t we go back to Minx. The place we met.”

“Okay.”

“Unless…” I tilt my head. “You really want to get wild?”

He nods. “I want to get wild. But not, like, kill people wild.”

I snort a laugh. “Fair. Let’s go.”

I haul myself up, already missing the contact between us. His body is still warm, a remnant of his humanity, and I will cherish it for as long as it lasts.

We start walking, moving much quicker than he’s used to.

“I don’t even have to think about it? I just move faster?”

“You have to think about it to move normally when you want to blend in with mortals. That’s why we have Lair, our vampire nightclub. We can be ourselves there.”

“We should go.”

“Not yet, lover. It’s… an experience. Not for bloodlings.”

“Bloodlings?”

“Baby vampires. It would overwhelm you. It’s my kind of place.”

“Is there sex?”

“Lots of it.”

“Blood?”

“Loads.”

He licks his lips. “That sounds kind of good.”

I chuckle, swinging his hand. “Ah, your beast is waking up. We’ll go when you’re ready.”

He nods, gazing up at the sky. “Everything is so… clear and vibrant. Like the world was on mute before.”

“Yep. I only vaguely remember. Eventually you get used to it. It becomes normal and you learn to use it to your advantage. I’m still trying to sneak up on Eros, but he always hears me coming.”

Kyson laughs. “You’re such a fun person. Now I know where I’ve been going wrong all these years. I was looking for someone serious and academic. Someone who thought a fun night out was a museum and maybe snuggling up with a good book. But what I needed was excitement. Danger, even.”

“Well, I like a good museum and I’ll even read on occasion. You didn’t go wrong at all. You were just living life until our paths finally crossed.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

We walk on a bit more, Kyson’s thoughts swirling so quickly even I can’t read them. Eventually, he asks a question.

“You, um, you won’t have sex with other people, right?”

“What? Of course not. Why would you ask that?”
