“Not a clue,” Joe said. He was more interested in finding out if Darcy had arrived.

The pack was here in full force and he saw his mother standing with his father. They were laughing at something, but he was more interested in his mate.

Last night, after he had mentioned that Darcy would make an amazing alpha wife, she had seemed to be a little withdrawn. He didn’t know if she felt like they were moving too fast. He didn’t think they were, but if she did, then he would deal with it. Maybe there was a time limit on them moving fast, he didn’t know. He did know that he was desperate to see her again.

He’d spent all day with his father learning the ropes, and now he wanted to spend some time with his woman.

Several of the women he remembered from school came to congratulate him, and flirt. He wasn’t interested.

“You know there are so many babes here and they’re all for you,” Wade said.

Once again, he was grabbed in a headlock. He got out of it easily, and then he saw her.

She carried a pot over to the table. This was how most of the parties took place. Every single person within the pack had to bring a dish. There was an assortment of savory and sweet dishes, but all he cared about was seeing Darcy. She put the pot down and then stepped back, lifting her head and looking around.

Darcy hadn’t spotted him yet, but he loved the dress she wore. It was a warm night, and she had on a beautiful blue strappy dress that molded to her tits and waist, and then seemed to flare out at the hips. She folded her arms and then he saw her watching the dance floor.

The dance floor was placed in the main square of the town. It wasn’t a real dance floor.

“Yo, dude, we’re talking to you,” Ryan said.

He hadn’t been listening to a word they said and the truth was, he wasn’t interested in anything, not while his mate stood alone.

“I’ll talk to you in a minute,” he said, pulling away from his friends and going toward Darcy.

No one had approached her. His own parents hadn’t even thanked her for coming, or bringing food. He was pretty sure they had thanked everyone else.

“It’s nice of you to come,” he said, drawing her attention to him.

“Joe, amazing party, huh?” she asked.

“Yeah, it’s okay.”

She pursed her lips and looked utterly adorable. “Not what you wanted?”

“I did ask them not to go all out, but you win some, you lose some, right?”

“Yeah, you do.” She chuckled. “Come on, can you blame them? They’re your parents and you’re their son. Of course they want you to feel welcome.”

He smiled. “How about you?” he asked. “Are you glad I’m back?”

“Yeah, I am.”

Now his heart raced just a little more. He wanted the whole pack to fade away, so there was only the two of them.

Joe knew she wanted to keep their newfound mating a secret, and he was happy to do that for the time being, which is why he made the suggestion.

He wasn’t ashamed of her, but he certainly wanted to enjoy their privacy a little more. He knew how quickly it could change, and his father might request that she start taking classes from his mom. He was learning the ropes of being an alpha, even though he felt like he was learning absolutely nothing. He figured following his father around all day would help him understand what it meant to be an alpha, but it didn’t. If anything, it makes him see what his dad did all day, every single day, with a constant smile on his face. There was never a dull moment, even when some of the pack demanded it.

“Do you want to dance?” he asked. There were already couples on the dance floor and he wanted any excuse to hold her in his arms. “Everyone is dancing.” He winked at her.

“I’d love to dance.”

She moved close to him and he took hold of her hand, walking her onto the dance floor.

“You know, I’m going to be the envy of a lot of women,” she said.

“Why?”
