Page 94 of A Foster Fling

I haven’t heard that name since…

Shutting my eyes, I refuse to turn. Instead, I take a stuttering breath and continue to walk forward. That is until I run into a hard body and almost fall on my ass. Arms come around me and flashes of the past make me throw a punch.

The arms don’t let me go and I growl as I start kicking and elbowing to try and get out of the hold.

“Oof.”

Good.I throw another fist, but she grabs my wrist with a force I didn’t expect. It makes me wince, and now I’m even more pissed. Her eyes blaze as she stares into mine, but it's the menacing smile that makes my skin feel tight and my head feel like it’s going insane.

Tattoos peek up from beneath her clothes, drawing the eye. When my sights land back on her face, her smile turns into something else, and suddenly, I feel like I’m floating in darkness.

Smoke envelops us and we land on something soft. I’m scared. I don’t know where I am.How do I get home?

“Get off me!” A pang of pain hits my chest. I haven’t cried those words since…

This mysterious girl and I start to grapple again, but it’s the slap to my face that stuns me.

“You bitch!”I screech.

She laughs. Shefuckinglaughs. What is wrong with her? Her hand grabs my neck and I scream. Her smile is back and worse than before as she leans in, making me shut my eyes.

This is it.Kill me already, because my life is nothing but a clusterfuck so far. I’m tired—just so damn tired of trying. I’m taken by surprise when her lips press against mine, forcing her tongue inside.

I bite her.

She laughs and forces me to taste the copper between us. More memories assault me, and I can feel the tears fall.

“Did you miss me, Mel?”

With a second wind I didn’t know I had, I shove her off me and run, stumbling off the bed. But she’s quick, grabbing onto my ankles and pulling me back. I kick, but it’s no use; she’s so much stronger than I remember.

“You’re mine, Mel. Where do you think you’re going?”

I whimper as she manages to crawl over me, pinning my arms above my head. She thrusts, but I don’t feel anything between her legs, and I’m left with more questions than I started with. How did she tuck it in so tight?

“What did you do to Jaiden?”

Her face morphs into something I don’t recognize, then quickly melts back into a scowl.

“You alwaysdidwant him more. Did you know I had to make him claim you? The bastard never knew what he wanted. He was weak. He needed me to make things right.”

“What did you do to Jaiden?” I’m screaming it, hoping he’s here somewhere, hoping he can hear my voice.

She sneers and I wince at the tone of her voice as she yells right back. “He neverdeservedyou! You werealwaysmine first! Why can’t you love meback?”

I don’t know what to say to that. Despite sounding like she’s pissed; the vulnerability of her words makes my heart hurt even worse than the thought of Jaiden leaving me behind to suffer alone.

Her grip leaves my wrists, and she caresses my face. “Why can’t you love me back?”

“Where’s Jaiden?”

“Where he belongs. Kept in a cage where he always wanted to be.”

What does that mean?

I refuse to believe that. Jaiden never wanted to be tied down to anything. Have I been wrong this whole time? Have I never known who my brother was? Is?Is he still here?

“How can you love me and hate Jaiden when he’s a part of you?”
