I ended the call and reached her, tugging her into my embrace.

The Reaper whispered one word, slamming it into my skull with enough force to be a physical punch.

Playground.

Chapter 13

Ineeded to search the playground. The Reaper insisted, pushing urgency into the word as it repeated in my head.

Playground.Playground.PLAYGROUND.

Without pausing to explain, I grabbed Rowen’s hand and tugged her to the play equipment we set up a couple of years ago when members started having kids.

My gaze swept over the slide, the monkey bars, and every inch of space visible to the eye. A frustrated groan fell from my lips as I worried that I had gotten it wrong.

“Jakey!” Rowen exclaimed. She let go of my hand and ducked under the enclosure, finding one of Jacob’s drawings.

The smart kid stuck a big rock on top so the wind couldn’t blow it away.

She stared at the drawing, and her hand slapped over her mouth. A muffled cry followed.

I took it when she pushed the paper into my hand. “Fuck.”

Jacob drew a man wearing a dark blue mask. He was reaching for Jacob as he ran. But, in the background, a black shadow followed with glowing red eyes. The Reaper. And he waspissed.

The part that proved my boy was fucking brilliant? He included the sign for where he’d been taken. Hoover Dam.

I knew where to go to rescue him. “I love him, Ro. We’re going to get our son. Right now.”

She sniffled and threw her arms around my waist. “Thank you.”

“Of course. Let’s move.”

I led her to one of the company SUVs because we would need a cage. The drawing had gray lines behind the people and dark clouds. Jacob wanted me to know it would rain.

We sped out of the lot as I drove and handed Rowen my phone. I asked her to dial Grim’s number and place it on speaker.

He answered on the first ring. “Fill me in, V.P.”

Rael must have gone straight to Grim when I rushed out of the basement. He had his moments when I didn’t want to fucking throttle him. Not often, but they happened once in a while.

“Jacob’s been taken.”

“Shit. Where are you?”

“Heading to Hoover Dam.”

I could hear the surprise in his voice. “Hoover Dam?”

“Jacob left us a clue. A drawing.”

It probably sounded crazy. I didn’t care. I knew the kid saw shit, and he had probably saved his life by giving us this detail.

“What do you need?”

“Send backup. I’ve got Rowen with me.”

“Will do. You get your family safe. We’ll take care of this fucker.”
