Rage consumed me. I didn’t blink. Didn’t hesitate. A roar broke free from my chest, and I rushed toward Jacob. The Reaper took over, and his presence crackled the sky like a boom of thunder. My Little Man’s expression changed from fear to awe. He smiled when he saw me leap over the wobbly rope that connected both sides of the bridge.

My hand shot out, gripping Tommy’s throat. “Let. Him. Go.”

He released Jacob, and my boy stepped back, staring at me with fascination. “Helkin.”

The Reaper rumbled in greeting. “Stand back.”

Jacob obeyed.

Rowen reached him, nearly tackling her son as she picked him up and held him to her chest. “Jakey.”

“I’m alright, Mama. I knew Helkin would come. I left the drawing so he would know where to go.”

She blinked. “But it said Hoover Dam.”

“I knew he would figure it out. He told me so.”

Tommy began to fight, and I grew disgusted with his pitiful pleas for mercy. With a snarl, I threw him to the ground and hopped down to join him. My boots landed on the soft earth as the rain continued to soak all of us.

Tommy groaned as he tried to scramble away. He lifted his gun, pulled on the trigger, and right before he fired, he aimed at Rowen. The bullet left the gun as blind fury collided with bone-chilling terror.

No. Not now. A cry left my lips as I cursed Lucifer Morningstar. “You can’t take her from me!”

Everything went still like someone had pressed pause. The rain ceased to fall, freezing in place. The bullet paused in its trajectory halfway to Rowen. She stood in place where her body had blocked the bullet from hitting her son.

Only Jacob moved freely with me. “Helkin?”

“It’s Lucifer, Bud. He wants to talk.”

“The Devil?” he asked with a whisper.

“He’s not so scary. We have an agreement.”

“Are you his boss?”

This. Kid.

“We’re partners. Kind of.”

I held my hand out, and he took it, standing next to me with wide eyes as Lucifer appeared. For once, he didn’t turn into a tarantula, a bikini-clad stripper, or a demon. He popped into existence, standing in his usual black suit, tailored, pressed, and clean.

“Hello, Jakey.”

“Only Mama and Helkin can call me that.”

I smirked. The kid had guts.

Lucifer chuckled. “You’re a good fit for a Reaper, kid. Would you like to become like your new dad?”

I shrugged, answering before Jacob could since I didn’t want him trapped in a contract. “He won’t be forced. It’ll be his choice.”

Lucifer eyed him like a puzzle he wanted to put together. “He’s different. Unique. I have nothing like him in my collection.”

The asshole.

“He’s not an item to collect. He’s my son, you bastard.”

Lucifer’s head tilted back as he laughed. “If I want him, I’ll have him.” He waved a hand through the air. “This isn’t about your boy. It’s about her.”
