Rowen?

“Don’t you fucking dare take her from us,” I warned.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” He paused, flashing a grin. “But there’s a price for my involvement.”

There always was, and he enjoyed exploiting it. “What do you want?”

“Your firstborn.”

I blinked. “You son of a bitch.”

“I’m kidding.” He looked fucking serious. “Fine. A drop of Jacob’s blood. That’s it. One tiny drop.”

“What are you gonna do with it?”

My secret.

Fuck no. I opened my mouth to refuse when Jacob stepped in front of me.

“Will my blood save Mama?”

“It’ll save a whole lot of people, Jacob Casey.”

That struck a fear so deep in my bones that I shuddered. “Jakey.”

“Will you give me your blood? The choice is yours, young Jacob.”

He lifted his hand. “I will.”

Fuck!

Lucifer touched the tip of his finger to one of Jacob’s. A bright red droplet appeared, sucked into the air, and disappeared.

I grabbed my boy and held him against me. My Reaper was seething. He felt deceived.

“I’ve not harmed your offspring, Helkin.”

Wait.

Why was he saying that to the Reaper instead of me?

Lucifer grinned as our eyes met. “Better move your woman out of the path. You have ten seconds.”

He began to fade as I ran for Rowen. I reached her about two seconds before everything resumed. We landed on the ground as Jacob joined us. The bullet whizzed past our heads and hit the trunk of a tree.

Jacob leaned over Rowen. “Mama?”

“Stay here, Bud. I need to take care of this.”

“Okay, Daddy.”

Not Daddy Mammoth. Just Daddy.

“I love you. You’re mine. In my heart forever.”

“In mine too, Helkin.”

I reached for my scythe as it appeared in my fist.
