Time to reap the wicked.
Chapter 14
Iawakened to screaming. Cries of agony spilled into the night as the rain pelted my face in a steady drizzle.
My eyes opened. “Jakey.”
He leaned over me and smiled. “Mama. You’re back.”
“I’m here.” I cleared the water from my face and shook out my headful of braids. They were soaked.
“You okay?”
“Yes.” I sat up, looked to my right, and froze. “Is that, uh,” I couldn’t finish because a description failed me.
“It’s Helkin.”
I didn’t understand. Wasn’t that his imaginary friend?
“It’s Mammoth. He’s Helkin, too. The bestest protector. He’s better than all the Avengers combined. And he loves us, too. Like this big.” He opened his arms as wide as they could go. “He showed me that last week.”
“You’ve seen Helkin before this?”
Jacob nodded. “He comes to me sometimes, and we talk, but Mammoth doesn’t remember later.”
Wow.
I reached down and pinched my arm. Ouch!
Okay, I wasn’t sleeping. This wasn’t a dream.
“It’s real, Mama. You should believe it.”
“Um, okay, Jakey. I’ll try.”
The screaming continued, mixed with pleas of mercy.
“You’re not afraid?”
He shook his head. “Helkin told me about this, and he said I shouldn’t fear a reaper’s justice. It’s meant for those who hurt others. Bad men who try to get away with crimes.”
“So, let me get this straight. He’s two parts with two different names. Mammoth, the biker. Helkin, the Reaper.”
“Yep.” Jacob smiled wide. “Isn’t it the coolest?”
“It sure is.” I think.
I lifted my head and found Helkin watching me. I could tell it wasn’t Mammoth. His face had taken on a skeletal mask, and his eyes glowed with a silvery sheen. As I stared, he winked. A deep rumble came from his chest.
“Mine.”
He meantme.
“Helkin?”
He shivered. “Yes. My female.”
Jacob giggled. “He calls you his female all the time. He says you’re his queen, his love, and,” Jacob paused, “oh, his heartbeat.”
