“When it comes to me, you can be as selfish as you want.” He sinks his fingers into my hair, and for a moment, we forget where we are. At least I do until my phone starts to ring, and I see it’s my mom calling.

“We’re late.”

“All right.” Sawyer doesn’t look happy about it, but he lifts me off his lap and I answer the phone.

After I let my mom know we’re on our way, I think about tonight some more. “What are you going to say to Bruce?”

“It might not matter. For all I know, he could fire me after what went down between Paul and me. Not to mention Bruce is pissed about what happened with us.”

“My mom sounded happy when I told her both of us were coming to dinner. He might not be mad anymore.” I told my mom what really happened with the bet, so I’m sure she told Bruce.

“We’ll deal with whatever comes our way.” Sawyer lifts my hand to his mouth and kisses it.

When we pull into the driveway, and I see Paul’s car parked out front, a knot forms in my stomach. When Mom told me Paul was going to be at the family dinner, she didn’t sound too happy about it. Maybe Paul is causing problems between my mom and Bruce as well.

Sawyer opens my door for me, and I take his arm to walk inside together. We go to the kitchen since that’s where we spend most of our time, and I see Paul’s fiancée Kelly has a bunch of papers laid out on the island.

“Hey,” I say as we enter, and she glances up. She glares at Sawyer, but he doesn’t give a shit. It’s one of the many things I adore about my husband. He doesn’t put stock into what others think of him, and he’s going to do what he wants. I’m the only exception to that rule.

“Hi,” she responds before going back to the papers. As I get closer I can see it’s the seating chart for the wedding, and I briefly wonder if she scratched us off. I’m not going to ask, and I won’t be upset if she has.

“Is my mom around?”

“She’s in Bruce’s office with Paul.”

“Do you need help?” I ask her because I’m not about to interrupt whatever they might be talking about.

“No.” She doesn’t even look at me when she responds, and I can see out of the corner of my eye Sawyer is getting irritated. Honestly, we have no idea what Paul might have filled her head with, so I try not to take it personally.

“Come on, kitten. You start dinner and I’ll be your sous chef.”

“All right, but no—” I’m cut off by the sounds of shouting from the other side of the house.

“Stay here,” Sawyer orders before hurrying out of the kitchen.

Kelly rushes past me, and I manage to stand there for a few seconds before curiosity gets the better of me.

Chapter Fourteen

SAWYER

As soon as I open the door to Bruce’s office, it’s like a waterfall of tension rolls out. Bruce is standing in front of his desk, and Paul is inches from his face. There’s a chair knocked over on the floor, and I assume it’s the one Paul was sitting in.

The most surprising part is seeing Luke in the corner with his arms crossed over his chest.

“He’s a fucking liar, and you know it!” Paul either doesn’t register that I've walked in on this confrontation or he doesn’t give a shit.

“It’s no use to deny it,” Bruce says calmly. A little too calm for the scene in front of me, but I’m trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

“You.” Paul turns and glares at me, and I guess he’s not so oblivious to my appearance. “You’ve set me up. The both of you.” Now he’s pointing at Luke, who doesn’t flinch at the accusation.

Deciding that it’s probably best to go ahead and get this over with, I step into the office and put my hands in my pockets. “All right, let’s hear what I’ve done.”

“The two of you have set me up!” he screams, and his face reddens. His eyes are erratic, and he’s sweating through his dress shirt. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s high as a kite right now.

“I’m sorry, I was trying to keep this private,” Bruce says and glances over my shoulder. When I look back, I see Chloe and Kelly are standing at the door and Katherine is walking up behind them.

“What’s all the shouting?” she asks and looks to the women for answers.
