He was right. He needed to focus on what was important. If he lost control in front of Amy like he did earlier, he might be the one that scared her away for good. He would never do that to Cole.

“Trak! I screwed up, didn’t I?”

Cole chuckled, “Yes. But it is nothing that can’t be fixed.”

A chime came from their coms. Cane glanced down at the small communication screen he had built into his arm and sighed when he saw that Iron was summoning them.

With one last look at Cole, they both made their way out of the garden and towards the main housing building. As they approached, Cane paused to watch as the transport lifted off the ground. His heart ached, knowing deep down that Amy was on that craft. She was leaving them.

He followed Cole into the building and down the hall to Iron’s office. They entered to find Iron standing by the window looking up at the transport.

“You called for us?” Cole asked, shutting the door behind him.

“Yes,” Iron said, turning to face them, “the two of you will join me and Amy on a search in the desert.”

“What!” They both roared at the thought of their beautiful, tiny mate being taken out into the most dangerous part of this planet.

Iron raised a hand to silence them, his face devoid of any emotion.

“Amy has gone back to her cave to gather her things and will return in two hours to prepare for the sands. We will go with her.”

“Why in the trak would you allow such an insane idea, Iron?” Cane barked out, running his fingers through his short black hair.

“Because as happy as I am that the two of you have found your mate, Amy has many secrets that we need to learn.”

“What are you talking about?”

“She is the thief that entered the compound unseen and undetected. I need to know how she did that. I also want to know why she is so determined to stay in the forest, and how she has been able to survive for so long alone out there. She also told me that she was lost in the desert and almost died. She claimed she was saved by some unknown being, but I could see she was lying. We need answers. She is of an unknown race that has never been seen before. I also got word from Lace that she is Human from Earth. He heard Grom and the gang speaking of human slaves for sale by the Koroks. There are simply too many questions that need to be answered, and I think being out in the desert, alone with her might help us figure out what it is she is hiding.”

Cane took in a long, deep breath in the hopes of calming down enough to speak. Iron was right. Amy did seem to have a lot of secrets that involved not just her, but the entire base as well. They needed to find out what she knew, and perhaps Iron was correct. Getting her away from the city to a secluded part of the desert might be the way to do it.

“I will not let you hurt her in any way, Iron,” Cole said, his voice laced with anger.

“I would never harm your mate Cole, you know that. We simply need to question her and to try to figure out what she knows and what she is hiding. I do not believe she has bad intentions for us or for the people that live on this compound, but I cannot be sure until I speak with her more.”

Cane hesitated for a moment before he asked the one question that was plaguing his mind.

“Did she reject us?” He whispered, unable to look at Iron or his brother.

“No,” Iron assured them, “She just needs time, Cane. Have patience with her. Finding out you have a mate is not easy for any female. She just found out she has two. It will take her some time to wrap her mind around it.”

Cane nodded, letting out a long sigh of relief at the news that Amy had not left because she wanted to get away from them. That she had not rejected them after all.

With the knowledge that Amy would be going with them to the desert, Cane needed to focus on making sure she was safe at all times. In order to do that, he needed to have his mind on the mission. They all felt the loss of not just Ice, but all the warriors that had gone with her. Dio, the leader of the team that had gone in search of the missing children, was a close friend of theirs as well. They needed to find them and bring them home.

He stepped up to the holograph of the desert and crossed his arms.

“Where do you intend to search?” he asked Iron.

Cole approached, studying the map as well.

Iron moved away from the window and went to stand behind his desk. “The only place that has not been searched properly is the Shadow valley.”

“We cannot take Amy there! That is where the night beasts live. Their lairs are littered in the caves in that valley.”

“I know. But it is the only place I can think of to look for Ice. I need to find her, Cane, one way or another. I need to know what has become of my mate.”

“We will need to take a shuttle with us. It will keep us safe at night when the beasts roam the sands.”
