“You're flying us home,” He called to Cole, a small smile playing on his lips. Cole shot him a heated look but nodded and moved to sit next to Lace in the front.
Amy curled her body into Cane, loving the warmth that flowed off his skin.
“Thank you, Amy,” Cane whispered into her hair, placing a long kiss to her head.
“For what?” she asked, her eyes already closing. She was exhausted from the walk back and the sleepless nights from having to share their tent with other warriors.
“For everything. For coming into our lives. For saving us from the Koroks… For helping Ice and Steel survive… for saving me and my brother from a life of loneliness.”
She lifted her head, meeting his eyes.
“Cane, you and Cole saved me too. I thought I would never find someone to love on this planet. I was sure I would be alone for the rest of my life. I was taken from everything I knew and got tossed into this strange world. I didn’t understand anything… not the words spoken to me, not the culture, nothing. But that’s okay. I have you and Cole now. I’m not scared anymore, Cane.”
“I never want you to be scared, Amy. I need you to know that I will always protect you. I… I get angry sometimes, and I act out, but that anger will never be directed at you.”
“Shh,” She whispered, pulling his face down so she could kiss him. She didn’t want him to think that there was anything wrong with him getting angry sometimes. Everyone got angry. She knew, deep down, that he would never hurt her. He would never let his anger drive him to a point where he would do something that wasn’t in his nature. Yes, he was big, powerful, and deadly, but he used that to help people, not hurt them. The only ones that got to feel the truth of his wrath were those that preyed on the innocent, and as far as Amy was concerned, they deserved it.
She deepened the kiss, needing the contact with him just as much as he did. She had no idea how this wonderful new relationship with two huge cyborg warriors was going to go, but if the last few days were any indication, things were going to be amazing. She never saw so much as a hint of jealousy or the feeling of being left out.
Cole and she both knew that Cane needed the physical contact with her more than Cole did, and he never minded when Cane held her, or pulled her closer. Cole had his own special moments with her, making sure he was always close, or holding her hand, or touching her hair. When they kissed, she felt the feelings they both had for her. The uncertainty if they would be able to make it work, and the fear of losing her.
Cole had explained to her that Arusian males needed a mate to balance out a chemical reaction that happened in their bodies. If they didn’t find one, the imbalance could drive them mad, making them do horrible things out of anger and despair.
She still had so much to learn about her new family. Not just the cyborg one, but Kisma and Maku had so much more to them. She hated that they had suffered in the past because of cruel, selfish aliens that abused their abilities. She had no doubt in her mind that Iron and Ice would never do that.
Resting her head onto Cane’s shoulder, Amy closed her eyes and thought about her sister again. She missed her so much. Sam would have loved all of this. The aliens, the cyborgs, the night beasts. She was so much like their mom, with her open mindedness, her acceptance of things and her understanding. She hoped that Sam was happy, and that she wasn’t hurting too much at the disappearance of her sister.
Amy wasn’t sure when she drifted off, but the next thing she knew, she was being carried off the transport in Cane’s arms. She could sense Cole right beside her.
Opening her eyes, she took in the darkening sky and the slightly cooler air around her.
“Cane?” She whispered, blinking to try get her eyes to focus.
“I’m right here, Amy. I’ve got you.”
A soft brush on her hair told her that Cole wasn’t planning on leaving her side either.
“Emi… Tope...”
Cane chuckled, “Iron has cleared the compound. We will deal with introducing everyone to them tomorrow. For now, we all need rest.”
She snuggled deeper into his chest and sighed, “Okay.”
She felt Cane begin to walk again, the heavy doors to the housing complex open, then nothing.
Chapter Twenty-One
Cane carried Amy into the housing building and paused when they all stepped inside. Medics came rushing out from the far room, crowding Ice and Steel, before they were rushed away to be taken care of. Once the large hall was clear of all warriors, he waited for Emi and Tope to come in. The room was dark, and it was hard to see their sleek black bodies move in the space, but Cane caught enough to see them sniffing at the furniture and exploring the space.
He turned to Cole, uncertainty clouding his mind.
“Your room or mine?” He asked, shifting Amy closer to his chest.
Cole frowned, lowering his gaze to the ground.
“Neither,” Iron said, coming to stand beside Cane.
They both looked up at him with a frown.
