“I am not sure he did, Iron, but he was lost to madness many years ago. We need to prepare for the worst.”

“I will take care of her,” Ice said as she met Iron’s eyes, “I will make sure she feels safe, as I do with all the other females I care for.”

Iron bent to give his mate a quick kiss before they all turned to watch as Amy helped the three females onto one of the transports.

He desperately wanted to go to her. To hold her in his arms and assure his mind that she was really safe. But he knew that the other females needed to be taken to the compound without cyborgs in the transport. The small space and their larger size could be too much for them. The last thing he wanted was to scare them more than they already were.

Instead, he watched as the doors to the transport closed and it lifted into the air. He and Cole would follow in the next transport. He knew Lace and his team would take care of the remaining Korok and gather all the information they could as to what Shadow and the others were doing here.

Once they knew who was involved in this, they would strike first.

“Go back to the compound,” Iron ordered them, “Take care of your mate. She will need your help with the other females.”

They didn’t need telling twice. The moment the next transport lowered to the stone courtyard, Cane and Cole rushed towards it. They paused so the next wave of warriors could run off, before they climbed in. The transport lifted into the air and raced back over the city. He could see the small shape of the transport with Amy and the other females ahead of them.

“This is bigger than we thought,” Cole said, breaking his stare from the small craft ahead of them.

He turned to his brother, “Yes. If Shadow is involved, it explains a lot.”

“He must have been the one who got into the female residence. With his enhancements, the females would have thought he was one of us.”

“I believe he was the one who gave the Korok the idea of the weapon they used in the desert. He would know how to take down a cyborg.”

“Do you think he had the Zelosians involved in this?”

“I have no doubt. I saw a Zelosian transport take off from the fortress when we attacked. But why? Why would the Korok, the Zelos and the city gangs all be working with Shadow? What does he have that they need?”

Cole stayed quiet for a moment before he said, “Us.”

“What?”

“He can give them us. The Iron militia. He knows how Iron thinks. He served with him for a long time before he went mad. I think he promised them the destruction of the only force on this planet that wants to see peace. We have been a hindrance to all three races from the moment Iron came to this planet. Now, they have a way to even the odds against us. This is just the beginning, Cane.”

Cane didn’t say anything. He turned back to the window and watched as the craft that carried their mate lowered to the grounds inside the compound. Warriors in full battle armor roamed the compound, each one on high alert.

Changes would need to be made to the compound as well as the security. He would not allow Amy and the other females, or anyone that called the compound their home to feel afraid. This was their haven. Their safe place and he would be damned if one insane male took that away.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Amy stayed close to Sam and the others as Smoke and a small group of female medics worked on their injuries. She knew Cane and Cole were waiting for her just outside the door to the medical room they had been taken to when they landed, but she needed to make sure her sister would be okay.

Smoke entered the room almost an hour later, making sure to move slowly as he did. She appreciated the male for his caring way. The first time he came in to see them, Mika had been terrified of his metal hands and enhanced eyes.

“Amy?” He asked from the door.

Amy looked over at where Mika lay sleeping beside Rachel. The two women were given medication to help them sleep. Mika because she was so scared, and Rachel for the pain in her arm. Smoke needed to scan the limb, but any movement caused her intense pain.

She met Sam’s eyes, who lay on the medical bed closest to where she sat.

Amy stood when he entered, then nodded for him to come closer.

“How are you feeling, Sam?” Smoke asked in a warm, compassionate voice.

Sam gave Amy a look before she sat up more and said, “Better. Thank you. Whatever was in that shot took care of the pain in my head quickly. The gash on my head is almost healed as well.”

“It was a dose of nano healing. I am glad to hear you are feeling better. I brought you clean clothes to change into. I also have the kitchen preparing food for you all. It will be here in half an hour.”

“What about Rachel and Mika?” Amy asked, biting her lip. When Smoke had scanned Rachel’s arm, he didn’t look happy with the results.
