He let out a heavy sigh before he said, “The female’s arm is too damaged for healing. Too many nerves were severed by the break and the lack of medical treatment has left the limb with minimal function. I fear it will need to be removed.”

“Oh God,” Sam breathed, grabbing Amy’s hand.

“Will you be able to fit her with an enhanced arm?”

“If that is what she wishes then yes. It will take some time for us to map out her nerves and learn how to attach each one to the synthetic arm, but I feel confident we will be able to fit her with an enhanced one. It is her choice, however. I will do what I can if she does not wish it, but if she wants to keep her arm, she will forever have pain and have minimal use of the limb.”

“Bastards,” Sam barked, making Amy turn to her. Her sister had tears in her eyes as she looked over at where the other two women lay sleeping.

“What about Mika?” Amy asked, dread filling her at what Smoke would say.

“I found extensive bruising on most of her body, signifying that she was beaten repeatedly. She was starved and very malnourished, but what concerns me the most is her mental state. I found no evidence that she was violated, but I believe Shadow may have made her believe he would do so many times. She had bound marks on her feet and wrists, as well as bruising in the shape of a large hand on her inner thighs and breasts. Apart from the physical torment the female went through, I believe she suffered a great deal of psychological torment as well. The other females said that she was often taken alone by Shadow. He is not a sane male, Amy. He lost his mind to madness many years ago. I hate to think of the things he did to her.”

Tears slipped from Amy’s eyes as nausea built inside her.

“And me?”

Smoke smiled, “You and the babies are fine. You need to eat, and get some rest, but everything is as it should be.”

She let out a long, relieved sigh and sat back down. Kisma had reassured her that the babies were fine, but she wanted to hear it from Smoke as well. She trusted Kisma with her life, but the more she heard it, the better she felt.

“I will return when the food is ready for you. Cane and Cole are waiting outside for you.”

“Thank you, Smoke. Can you ask them to come in please?”

He bowed his head then turned and walked back to the door. He stepped out for a moment, then Cane and Cole entered.

She felt Sam’s hand tighten around hers when the two large males filled the space. They stayed by the door, waiting to see if they frightened Sam.

Amy turned to her sister, “Sam, it’s okay.”

“You never need to fear us, Sam,” Cole said, raising his hands at his sides, “As the sister of our mate, you are our family now as well.”

Sam gave them a small nod, but her eyes stayed glued to the males as they approached. Amy reached out a hand and pulled Cane closer. Cole moved to her back, pressing a long, warm kiss to her head. Cane lowered to a seat beside Amy, lifting her hand to his lips.

“Are you well?” Cane asked, rubbing her knuckles with his thumb.

“I’m fine. So are the babies. Smoke said everything is perfect.”

Cane’s eyes slipped down to her neck, anger flaring in his dark brown gaze.

She reached out, cupping his cheek, and waited for him to look at her.

“I’m okay, Cane. I promise.”

“We thought we lost you,” Cole spoke from behind her, his hands resting gently on her shoulders, “I’ve never felt a pain so intense in my life.”

She moved her hand from Cane’s face to grip Cole’s hand on her shoulder. She looked up at him, at the tortured look in his eyes.

“I’m right here, Cole. I’m not going anywhere.”

When he gave her a weak smile, Amy turned back to Sam.

“Sam, this is Cane and Cole. My mates. Guys, this is my baby sister, Samantha Ruth Mackenzie.”

Sam rolled her eyes, a small, annoyed smile pulling at her lips.

“Just Sam. If any of you ever call me Samantha I’ll kick your ass.”
