“What?”

“He’s got a graduation party,” Seth explained.

My eyebrows shot up. “But he’s not graduating…”

“His girlfriend is.”

“He has a girlfriend?” Why was this the first time I was hearing about it? My friendship with my ex/Ace’s best friend from childhood was tentative at best, but I figured I would’ve heard if Owen had a steady girl before this.

“Didn’t I tell you she asked him to prom?”

“No.”

“Shit, I was sure I did. I posted pics on Facebook and everything.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Right. Sorry,” he muttered like he could see me rolling them through the phone. Dating him had been a trial, and it had been more than five years since we broke up, but we still remembered each other’s quirks. Frankly, I could do with forgetting them, but it helped to recall his occasional flakiness when dealing with him. “I keep forgetting you’re still in the Stone Age when it comes to social media.”

I scoffed. I had an account, I just barely checked it. Last thing I needed when I was trying to concentrate at work was the near-constant vibration and binging of notifications, unlike the rest of my staff who I often caught distracted by some video or texting their friends. Okay, I’ll fess up to the texting, but the videos were just plain annoying sometimes. Ace, on the other hand, was somewhat addicted. Why hadn’t he mentioned Owen had a girlfriend? Maybe he had and I hadn’t paid attention. I’d been particularly spacey lately. It wasn’t like I had a lot on my mind or anything.

“So you’re not coming.” My sigh really couldn’t have been any less dramatic. It wasn’t even funny how much my ex could annoy me on any given day.

“Chill, D. I’m still not sure. Owen definitely won’t, though.”

“Okay. Well, thanks for the heads up and text me if you end up being a no, please.”

“Will do.”
