“Hopefully by then our house is ready.”
“If not, we can prepare the food in our kitchen.”
“I think that’s a brilliant idea,” Tristan said as he stepped out of the small hallway.
“You do?”
“Of course. Have you found a few samples you like?”
Olivia pointed at a stack she’d set aside. “I like these.”
“I’ll get right on it tomorrow and start bringing everything here. Blake and I were thinking of making the living, bath, and bedroom our priority. We can finish the second bedroom later on.”
“Okay.”
Niev and Olivia spent the rest of the evening cooking while Blake and Tristan finished up in the bathroom. Dinner was quiet, with everyone exhausted from the day. After their guests left, Blake did the dishes while Niev sat down and read on the couch.
“When I’m done, I’ll call Ann. How about we leave the day after tomorrow?” Blake asked, turning his head toward her his hands still in the sink.
“Sounds good to me. Will that be okay with your father?”
“He said we could leave at any time.”
“Then I’ll pack tomorrow.”
“I wanted to leave in the evening. Streets will be clearer with less traffic.”
“You won’t fall asleep?”
“No, I’ll stay up late tomorrow to adjust and sleep a little during the day.”
“Okay. I’m sure we’ll find a place to rest if you can’t go any longer. Or I’ll drive for an hour or two.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Through the bond, she could feel his excitement mixing with hers.
“You’re not fighting me on wanting to drive?”
“I don’t think your stomach is touching the steering wheel yet. I’m a man of my word.”
He set the last pan on the drying rack and dried his hands before sitting next to her. Laying his arm around her shoulders, he pulled her closer. She set the book aside and shifted her weight so she could sit on his lap facing him with her legs to either side.
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
Everything happening simultaneously—the move, the twins, and losing Kai—brought a lot of anxiety for both of them. Though they’d settled into their new life a few weeks ago, she wanted to be sure he was alright.
“I’m still nervous for the twins but taking it day by day is helping me a lot.”
“And with the move here?”
He started circling her thighs needing her touch to comfort himself. “Some days are harder, and others are easier. I enjoy being around my family but at the same time it pains me to see what I’ll never have. I like how Seth and I are getting along, and I love seeing you with them all.”
She pulled his hair band out and undid the knot on the back of his neck. Running her fingers through his hair, she studied his face closely.
“Is it still bearable?”
“Yes. Nothing compared to what I used to feel. The good definitely outweighs the bad.”
