“Three years ago, we had an unexpected death in our family.” I began seeing my father’s face in the crowd.

“Our family took a hard hit because not only did the world lose a legend, but so did we. A mother, best friend, and wife.” My hands started to shake at the feeling of everyone’s eyes on me.

“I broke the code of an unspoken rule between hockey players when I turned my back on everyone.”

Everyone was quiet as they stood and stared at me. I expected the spectators who has booed us throughout the whole event to have left by now, but they were still here looking at me.

“Our team seemed like a joke to everybody especially since we call ourselves rebels and Louisiana didn’t have a team since 2007. So, today is a big honor for us and our people back home. It’s the first of more to come.”

I raised the trophy and gazed up. “This is for you, mom.”

CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT

We took the party back to our place since we won’t bother anyone with our loud music and late-night partying.

We were having a good time dancing, hanging out outside around the fire pit and some were bold enough to have drinks Brandon’s friends brought over.

Clarissa’s sister, Daphne was also invited over to join in on our celebrations since she is responsible for our awesome uniforms.

Last time things didn’t go too well for Jake. He acted all weird and made no sense whatsoever, but this time he was doing pretty good considering she was laughing at his jokes and they have spent almost the whole night together since we got here.

I ended up on the dancefloor with Briana, Tammy, and Clarissa while Megan was missing—but not completely since we suspected she was having one hell of a hot make-out session with Jared. They kind of disappeared together so it wasn’t hard to figure out.

In my heart, I was missing my friends when an upbeat song came up and I was surrounded by a bunch of people dancing to the same song.

I rocked my hips to the beat of the song, raised my arms in the air, and swayed them around to the beat of my hips.

Megan finally emerged from wherever she was with Jared and joined us on the dance floor while Jared headed over to Brandon who decided to join the party inside.

We got Jared to join us on the dancefloor and he wasn’t shy to get loose and shake his ass. Brandon, on the other hand, needed some persuasion.

“Nobody is looking,” I assured him sensing his discomfort.

“They are more worried about their own moves and think they are bad at dancing,” I added.

Taking the lead by reaching for him and placing my hand on his waist to pull us a bit closer.

His stormy grey eyes followed my hands for a second and I thought I’ve done something wrong, but he extinguished the feeling when he shot me an assuring smile.

“I’m more worried about me making a fool of myself in front of you.”

“Nah, that’s impossible,” Without realizing what I was doing I found myself walking my hands up over his chest and snaking them around his neck.

“You watched me fall on my ass and still offered to help me out without laughing.”

He chuckled.

“I was afraid that you will punch me in the throat.”

I felt a buzz reaping through my spine and making its way up before slowly making its way down and sneaking into the pit of my stomach when he rested his hands on my hips.

I wasn’t sure what it meant, but it didn’t seem to bother Brandon—so, I wasn’t going to make a big deal of it.

There was a question bugging me in the back of my mind and no matter how many times I tried to suppress it, it kept on sneaking out.

Was I being delusional for not wanting to jump his bones, but at the same time imagining what his lips would feel like?

Was he the type that would take things slow—leave me in charge or will he be dominant?
