“After Jon talks with Marty.” He glanced at his fellow sniper. “Do you mind?”
“It will be my pleasure.” Jon inclined his head toward Emma. “She should leave before I begin.”
“No marks.”
“No promises.”
David’s lips twitched as he approached Levi. “I want to take Emma to the house before I call Jordan.”
His brother tossed him a set of keys to the ATV and told him where he and Elliot had left the vehicle. “We have this, bro. Take care of your girl.”
“Thanks. I owe you.”
A quick grin. “You owe me about a hundred, but don’t worry. I’ll collect.”
He punched his brother lightly on the shoulder and returned to Emma. He helped her stand. “Come on. Let’s go home.”
As he passed Jon, he murmured, “You have twenty minutes before I make the call.”
“Won’t take that long.”
Listening to Marty groan and whine to Jackson about his shoulder wound, David agreed with Jon’s assessment. “Wait five minutes.”
A nod.
When they were out of sight of the others, Emma asked, “What’s Jon going to do?”
“Find out everything Marty knows.”
She blinked. “Why are we leaving the scene?”
“First, it’s cold out here. Second, you don’t want to be here when Jon questions Marty.”
“Interrogate, you mean?”
“That’s right. We need information, fast. Time isn’t on our side now that the game master has been captured. If word leaks, members of the Hunt Club will go to ground.” They couldn’t let that happen.
Emma shivered. “I am cold,” she admitted. “Please tell me we have a ride to the house. I don’t think I can walk the rest of the way.”
He held up the ATV key. “Your chariot awaits, my lady.”
“Thank goodness.”
David wrapped his arm around her shoulders, as much to remind himself that his Emma was alive as to share his body heat. “We’re in for a cool ride, I’m afraid, but we’ll get you warm once we reach the house.” He kissed the top of her head. “Owen probably took Gigi to the ranch house.”
Her breath caught. “Oh, I can’t wait to see her.” Emma’s steps quickened.
As David climbed onto the ATV and helped Emma settle behind him, a scream sounded in the distance.
Emma froze. “Was that…?”
“Let’s go.” After he took care of Emma, David had phone calls to make.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Emma snuggled close to David’s back and held tight as he drove the ATV toward the Rocking M’s ranch house. The brisk breeze and cold temperature chilled Emma to the bone. Shudders rolled through her body, one right after another in a continuous stream.
“Almost there,” David said over his shoulder. “You’ll be warm soon.”
