I tug him closer by his T-shirt, and his lips twitch. “I think I prefer you drunk.”

“Everyone prefers me drunk,” I reply.

Just then, my nanna walks past with Mark’s dad, Maverick, at her side. “So this is a bungalow?” she asks.

“Yes. It’s a two bedroom. My son Mark can decorate it for you, and have your stuff moved in before the end of the month.”

My lips part as I pull away from Mark. “You are moving, Nanna?”

She smiles wide. “Yes. It’s a ten-minute drive from you, but don’t worry, he owns the house next door too, so you could move in there if you wanted,” she announces, before a smug smile spreads across her face. “I hear that Liam is single and ready to mingle. Maybe you could buy it with him when the time comes.”

“No!” Mark growls, taking me off guard.

My lashes flutter as I look up at him. I thought we were getting along and all the unpleasantries were in the past. “Oh, is he too good for me?”

“I never said that,” he replies, glancing down at my lips.

“Then what are you saying?”

“You might want to hold that thought. The wedding party has followed,” Nanna announces.

Mark keeps his arm around me as they approach, for which I am grateful for. I’m not a person who can act sober when I’ve had a drink.

“You might want to stop smiling then,” Mark whispers. “You wouldn’t smile sober.”

“I said that out loud?”

His lips twitch, his eyes lit with mirth. “I really do think I prefer you drunk.”

“Then you should know this won’t be the last time I’m driven to drink.” I pat his cheek, beaming up at him. “Why aren’t you drunk?”

“Babe, I was drunk three pints ago, but you pushed me into a pool, which sobered me up.”

“We need to get you another pint,” I muse.

“Why? Planning to get me drunk to seduce me?”

“Freya, really?” Mum scolds.

I jerk back, placing a hand over my chest. “Holy crap you scared me.”

“You were just smiling at us,” Mum points out.

I rear back. “I was?”

Esther snorts. “You could never handle your drink.” She gazes up at her husband. “Could she, my love?”

“Pretty sure she can. My uncle Myles is passed out on a sun lounger because he couldn’t keep up,” Mark remarks.

He is just the sweetest.

Because it wasn’t me his uncle Myles couldn’t keep up with. It was my nan.

“Remember the time you hijacked a group of teens’ prom limo?” Danny asks. “That was a funny night.”

I tilt my head because no, I don’t remember him being there. I remember Summer being with me. We didn’t hijack it either. We just kicked a few girls out of it. They had made another girl think they were friends, all because her dad owned a limo company. They used her, and then tried saying she couldn’t get in the limo with them. Summer and I cannot stand bullies, so we intervened. We would have done it sober. The girl didn’t go to prom but we made sure she had a blast for the rest of the night.

“Didn’t realise you were there,” I remark.
