Page 47 of His Daggered Heart
He looks at me one eyebrow raised, well, maybe because I needed enough space in case I met the love of my life. “Come here.”
Limping over to him, I reach him and he turns me to face away from him.
My jaw must drop to the floor because lined on the opposite side of us are clothes for me. A neon light that saysKohen’s Angelsits above a beautiful vanity filled with makeup from the gods. I walk to it and just stare. On either side of the vanity are rows of clothes. I run my hands along the brand new pairs of all my favorite American Eagle jeans, to the left of it, drawers sit in between the top and bottom shelves. Shirts on top, and jeans on bottom. I open one of them and there are sunglasses in it. I move to one after another, finding all the brands I love.
I limp to the right side of the vanity where there are dresses lined up and all color coordinated, from short to long. Then there’s a Lazy Susan from floor to ceiling with shoes. I spin it and again, everything I need and could ever want from all my favorite places.
“When did you do this? Why did you do this?” I ask, tears clouding my vision.
He doesn’t answer and I turn to look at him, only he isn’t there. Panic floods me for a moment before I realize he is kneeling, huge red roses lying on the floor next to him, and a royal blue velvet box opened up to a huge solitaire diamond.
“I did this all wrong the first time,” he says. “I had a plan, but with us life never goes according to the plan does it?” I nod in agreement letting all the tears fall. “Even now, you’re naked as I do this.” He laughs. “There is a robe on the hook behind you.”
I turn quickly to grab it and wrap it around me.
“I want this, Alex, and I want it with you, forever. I meant what I said, I never want to be apart from you ever again in this lifetime or the next.”
I join him on my knees, cradling his face and kissing him softly.
“Will you marry me?” he asks as he removes the ring from the little box and tosses it on the floor.
“Yes, I will. I meant what I said too. I am yours. There is no one else for me, in this life or the next.”
He places the ring on my shaky finger. We climb up to our feet and kiss. Exchanging words in each lock of our lips, tongues dancing, souls swimming. Promising everything we have to one another. The doorbell chimes, pulling us from this euphoria. Kohen checks his phone.
“It’s Cora. Come on, let’s show her your ring.”
He pulls a black Nike sweatpant set from the shelf for me and I put it on. He also gets me some fuzzy slippers, sliding them on my feet. I cannot believe this is my life right now.
We walk down the stairs as he presses some buttons on his phone that unlock the door for them. Then he talks to her through the mic. “It’s open, I don’t know why you didn’t use your fingerprint.”
“I didn’t know if y’all would be swingin’ on the chandelier naked or something.”
“Right, that’s exactly what we were doing,” Kohen says sarcastically. “Meet us in the kitchen.”
Stuffing the phone in his pocket, he looks over at me smiling. I know I must be beaming because this is so crazy, the shoe hasn’t dropped. I think we will actually be okay.
“You happy, angel?”
“So fucking happy, handsome.” He wraps his fingers up in mine as we make our way toward the kitchen, Cora’s voice echoing through the empty hallways.
“I love you,” I say, bringing his hand up to my lips.
“I love you, too, so fucking much.”
Breakfast was amazing. Levi threw it down in the kitchen. Homemade pancakes, with ham, eggs, and bacon on the side. He drizzled gravy and sausage over buttery biscuits. It was heaven. I don’t think I have eaten that much in a while, but it was so damn good. Cora moans and groans the whole time while having foodgasms.
“Where did you learn to cook like this?” she questions.
“My mama taught me everything I know. She said, son, if you can’t find a woman to treat you right and feed you right, I’m gonna teach you to do it your damn self.So she did.’ His smile is always so genuine when he talks about his family, and Cora’s face is lit up, watching him go on and on about them.
“So!” I interrupt. “Did y’all fuck?”
“Alex! Oh my gosh,” Cora says, her cheeks bright red with embarrassment.
“Come on now, sweetness, sex talk at the table isn’t polite. What would my mama say?” Levi scolds.
“Fine,” I say, “but I will find out because that wasn’t a no.” I side-eye them. “And I won’t forget.’ I point at them both.
