Sullivan

It has been one long day. Most of my day was spent researching for my new book and reading other crime experts' manuscripts. Normally, I would enjoy a day like this, but seeing her in the one and only class I teach flipped it upside down. I looked at the roster this morning and saw the name Lyla. It didn’t even cross my mind that it could be the Lyla from the other night. There is a reason I steer clear of bars near campus. The chance of meeting a student is quite significant. As a professor for the university, you don’t cross those lines. I need to get better about drilling questions. Once sex is on the table, all inhibitions are lost. Then there is Lyla. She is one I wanted to see again. This is karma's way of saying, “Well, here you go.” I will keep this professional between Lyla and myself. It won’t be hard. However, the distraction of her will be hard to avoid.

After riding my bike home, I decide to grab a sandwich from the deli below our apartment complex. It’s been a long day and I haven’t eaten much. To be honest, I am nowhere hungry now, but I know it’s crucial to eat, especially since I want to hit the bike trail later.

I order my turkey club on sourdough with all the fixings and head up to my apartment. I walk into the apartment and see Todd watching the news. I head over to our kitchen table, sit down and chow down on my sandwich.

Todd walks into the kitchen and asks, “How was your day?”

I sigh, “It could've been better. Yours?”

He laughs, “Always enjoyment. Students are always intimated by the syllabus. I get a million questions from the overachievers who are hoping to buddy up with me. It was a good day. What fucked up your day?”

“You don’t want to know.”

“That bad, huh?”

“You have no idea. It started off great, like it always does. Then it came class time. I walk in like a hard ass, and someone says ‘Sully’. I look up to see who it is and correct them. It was Lyla.”

Todd bursts out a loud laugh and asks, “Are you serious?”

“I wish I wasn’t.”

He continues to chuckle, “You know this was bound to happen. Lincoln is not that big and is a college town. Dumb ass.”

“Appreciate it, man. Did I tell you? Kandace was sitting right next to her.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. She has a boyfriend, and now, she is a student. It's a done deal.”

“At least, you don’t have to see one of your one and dones three days a week.”

He questions, “I thought she one and done you?”

“Fuck you!” I respond.

He continues to laugh and walks back to the living area. I get why he is laughing. I am finally getting a taste of my own medicine. I gently pushed away several women after sex, hoping to never see them again. Sometimes, I would. I would just blow them off, leaving them speechless.

Here I am, not speechless but more on how I am going to handle some of the best sex in my life sitting across from me while I educate her. Clearly, I deserve this.
