CC thought telling them about spending the night with Brant would be enough but she found herself wanting to spill the beans about the other revelation.“There’s more.”

“What else could’ve happened?”

“Well…he told me I made him to want stay.Here.In Parker.”

Her friends looked at her.If their mouths could drop hang open any farther, their jaws would be on the floor.

“Wowzers,” Annie breathed.“I wasnotexpectingthat.”

CC shrugged.“You and me both.”

“So what are you going to do about it?”Breckin asked.

“I don’t really know.He might change his mind and leave in six months. If I get too attached, I’ll just be heartbroken when he leaves.”

“Why is he leaving in six months?”Sadie asked.

“He came to Parker because there’s this program that forgives student loans if people in the medical profession work in rural areas for a certain amount of time.Brant’s time was three years. He’s already been here two and a half so…”

“So he has the option to stay?”

“If the hospital in Lakeview that owns the clinic offers him the job, yeah.”

“Then he can just stay here,” Sadie said.“Problem solved.”

“I don’t want him to stay here just because of me.He could do so much more in the city.”

“But he wouldn’t be with you in the city,” Annie said.“That should count for something.”

“I don’t know, guys.I don’t want to hold him back.”

“He told you he wanted to stay,” Breckin added.“I doubt he thinks you’d be holding him back.”

“But his mom is in the city, too.”

“You know what I think?”Sadie said.“I think you’re making excuses because you’re scared. It’s okay to be scared, honey. You didn’t have the best example in parents growing up.That doesn’t mean you can’t have a happy ending.”

CC wanted to believe what her friends were saying. She really did.But Brant was so amazing at his job.She didn’t see how he’d be happy dealing with annoying old people in a small town for the rest of his career. And he already felt like he owed his mom so much.CC was afraid she wasn’t enough to warrant him to stay even though she still felt that hope fluttering inside her chest.

Sadie shook her hands.“Well, you don’t have to worry about that right now.Rightnow, what we want is details.Allthe details.Am I right, girls?”

Both Annie and Breckin nodded enthusiastically.“All the details,” Annie agreed.“You might not want to hear aboutoursex lives, but I’m totally up for hearing about yours.”

“I have so many people needing to see my vagina on a regular basis now that nothing fazes me,” Breckin added.“So spill.”

Spill CC did. After all, her dry spelldidend and her lady parts didn’t shrivel up and die. That was success in and of itself, no matter what the future held.
